Here’s How Much Money GM CEO Mary Barra Made In 2024

GM CEO Mary Barra earned 5.9 percent more in 2024 than she did in 2023, according to the latest data, though her base salary remains the same as it was in 2022.

Mary Barra’s windfall comes from add-ons to her salary, including stock awards and incentive pay, Automotive News reports, which, all told, amounted to roughly 13 times her regular salary in 2024.

GM CEO Mary Barra.

With everything added together, Mary Barra took home a whopping $29.5 million in pay for 2024. The largest item, stock awards, came to $19.5 million, a 33-percent surge from her 2023 haul of stocks. She got $6.7 million in direct incentive pay, a 27-percent rise from the previous year, though she got no stock options at all compared to $4.9 million in each of 2022 and 2023. These sums were stacked on her base $2.1 million salary.

Back in 2023 The General’s chief executive lost out on some significant incentives when the company missed its EV and autonomous vehicle (AV) targets. This actually caused her to get 3.9 percent less pay in 2023 than in 2022, when she raked in $28.9 million. Therefore, the income of Mary Barra for 2024 is almost identical to 2022, and only rose notably because of lost incentives in the intervening year.

Mark Reuss, president of GM, earned $18.5 million in 2024, or a little more than half of Barra’s pay, while Paul Jacobson got $13.1 million in his role as Chief Financial Officer. Now-retired Craig Glidden got $10.4 million in 2024 as one of the top executives of the currently defunct Cruise robotaxi subsidiary, and executive VP Rory Harvey pocketed $9.8 million in pay.

Mary Barry earned 310 times the $95,111 in pay a median General Motors employee took home in 2024. GM compensation committee chair Wesley Bush credited her with the automaker’s performance in 2024, noting the company’s successes were “a clear reflection of the successful efforts of our extraordinary executive leadership team, led by Ms. Barra, to drive our strategic transformation forward and invest in the business to grow value for shareholders.”

Though the company’s net income dropped 41 percent to $6 billion, its pretax earnings of $14.9 billion set a new record.

  1. So all those execs combined earner 81.3 million dollars last year. Is there a point where we as stock owners need to file a RICO lawsuit? I’m assuming this also doesn’t include board member pay, and that’s extra. We’re looking at potentially just executives making 2% of net profit which does hurt my returns. I don’t think there is that amount of added value, and this feels more like a mob of closely knit friends paying each other off and keeping each other employed.

    1. I’m curious how the value of her stock awards was affected by stock buybacks GM has done over the relevant period. Outstanding shares dropped by almost 20% over 2024, some quick and imprecise math makes me guess those buybacks were worth over $3 million to her. The recently announced buybacks of $6 billion would drop that amount of outstanding shares another 13% (based on current market cap). That $6 billion is money spent to fluff up the stock price and EPS instead of R&D, quality improvements, or employee pay. While many regular people who directly or indirectly own GM stock benefit a little bit from these buybacks, C-Suite and large holders benefit the most at the potential expense of company competitiveness. Another great American company, Intel, played these same buybacks games over the 2010’s and are pretty much on the deathknell because they lost their competitive edge in an industry with huge capital outlays.

        1. Luckily GM has been making money every single year, so it’s not as bad as Intel’s current unprofitability streak. I’d say reducing debt would be better in case they needed to borrow up, but their current debt is probably at relatively low rates making buybacks the better option to reduce money cost. GM’s Debt:Equity ratio at around 2 is much higher than the S&P Global average of around .3 (although Ford, who didn’t benefit from the bailout debt reset, is higher at around 3.5). I guess I’m more mad that most GM powertrains can’t touch the Germans for efficiency and power, something $6 billion could go a long ways towards matching.

Just clawing her way to the top, shooting down those around her who were in competition. She took no risks, just exploited the corporate system for maximum payback. When she makes GM #1 auto company in the world again, then we’ll talk about a big payout.

  20. I see much mass ignorance here. Most like to complain and few know any if only a few facts.

Would not last on the line for an hour?

Mary started at GM working on the line inspecting body panels at Hamtramck. She then went to the GM Kettering School and got a degree in Automotive electrical engineering. She used that job to pay her own way through collage. She later graduated with honors from Stamford. with a Masters in Business.

She then worked here way up through the company and made it to the top. She has kept GM stable and profitable post bail out and continued to try to change the toxic culture that killed GM before.
Has she been perfect? No. but she has done much better than those at Chrysler and Ford. Chrysler is now owned by the French and Ford is having major quality issues and a leader that can’t get Ford stock over $9 for very long.
These are very challenging times and difficult to plan for. She has done well for the most part and reacted to the areas she fell short.

People like her work 24/7 and enjoy little personal life. They miss the kids growing up and often end in divorce and often ulcers.
The path she took could be followed by anyone who is willing to put the time and effort it. It is not like she had to be 7 foot to put a ball in a net. Efforts equal results here.

What she does is kept GM profitable and the stock generally stable through many challenges. It is not like a sports figure that just takes and gives little back.

The fact is if someone else had come in and not done as she has done Gm would be owned by a foreign company and many jobs that are paying well above the average income in the plants would not exist here.

Some of you really need to learn how real car companies work. It is not just about building a cool car. Its about building high volume affordable boring cars that pay the bills and make money. That is a tough thing to do but that is where companies find stability and security.

So in place of complaining why don’t you take the same path as she has if you think you can do better. No one is stopping you. Put up or shut up.

Also I just flew in from California. EV products are a major part of California sales. EV models are everyplace. California is the largest auto market in America and if you do not offer EV models there you will be leaving money on the table. It is a must they offer these cars there but also keep ICE alive as long as possible that is just what Mary is doing in the most profitable areas.

Yes it is sad Cadillac is going all EV but as an ICE brand they are not earning their keep with only good sales of one model the Escalade. EV may save Cadillac if not they will die anyways.

    1. 2M6,

I don’t understand why folks keep saying if GM is not selling EVs, they’ll be “leaving money on the table”. If they’re losing money on every one they make, and they still are despite their convoluted statement about variable profit positive or whatever they said, then how exactly would they be leaving money on the table? As best as I can tell GM has never made a dime on EVs despite 29 years of trying.

I don’t suggest that they do this but EVs are such a drag on profitability that if they dropped them all tomorrow, they’d suddenly be making a lot more money.

  35. hmmm…paid to make cars customers don’t want. Imagine the profits they’d make if they built cars customers want — instead of politicians. I live in CA and 2% of the whak jobs here want an EV. Cadillac is selling the sh33t out of Escalade – ICE trucks – not EV Escalades.

  36. Guess the days of CEOs making 25 percent more than company workers is a thing of the past. That’s how ridiculous it has become

  37. I have no problem with CEOs being paid well…the sky is the limit…IF they perform and deliver for the company. On most metrics Mary Barra is a failure. Everyone here knows GM’s issues and the litany of recent failures so I won’t go through them all but my opinion is that GM has made themselves appear to be healthy and profitable but in actuality, there are fundamental problems that will have ramifications long after Barra is gone.

It’s been said that US presidents cannot truthfully be judged until long after they’re gone and the full measure of history reveals the wisdom, or lack thereof, of their decisions. I think that applies here too. She may be ‘Woman of the Year’ now but in time, like with Roger B. Smith, she will have left GM worse than she found it.

  39. I have no problem with high pay when it is merited, it’s the junk product portfolio (BWs, ZR2s, and C8 notwithstanding) she keeps pushing.

Stock price isn’t everything. Were any of you around in 2000?
I love the misandrist comments that lack a logical argument. Very predictable. Try harder. It is funny how people keep bringing up her past. Don’t conflate qualifications with competence.

Putting all of your eggs in one basket (goal zero, ev-only by ’35) is foolish no matter the industry. But it is expected from someone who has never been told “no”. In some circles this is called a “protected class”. If Mary’s admin assistants continue to post here in a vain attempt to defend her, they should at least use their real names so that they can take some credit for their spin. Same for the simps.

  40. It’s time to boycott G.M.
They need to fix problems and get rid of Mary B. and her cronies.

    1. Pretty easy to boycott a company when they no longer make anything you want and the crap they do make is overpriced. I haven’t boycotted them on purpose, there was a point in time that the only vehicles I had ever owned were GM, but the last thing I bought was a 2015 Z/28. I didn’t leave “GM”, “gm” left me.
