GM Working On Fix For Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Sunroofs Randomly Opening

Some Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup truck owners are reporting that their vehicle sunroof will “randomly” open without using of the sunroof switch. GM is now reportedly working on a fix. In the meantime, the automaker has outlined how to stop the issue from occurring until a design improvement is implemented.

According to preliminary information bulletin PIT6336A recently sent to GM dealers, the issue can affect units of Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 produced between the 2023 and 2025 model years. The issue apparently doesn’t follow any clear pattern, with some customers stating that the sunroof will tilt open when they start the vehicle, or when certain lights are turned on, or even after the vehicle has been parked and left unattended. The sunroof typically defaults to an upwards “vent” position, which could be a problem if rain rolls in or the vehicle is left sitting for a long time.

This issue affects a wide range of markets, including units located the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and many countries across South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It’s currently unclear exactly how many units may be affected by the issue.

The root cause appears to be a glitch in the microprocessor located inside the overhead roof console. GM is currently investigating the issue and working on a design improvement to prevent it from happening in the future.

Until a permanent fix is available, GM is offering a temporary solution, namely disabling the sunroof entirely by removing a specific fuse. To disable the sunroof, owners can remove fuse F54DR, located in the right-hand instrument panel junction block (X51R). Removing the fuse will cut power to the sunroof, effectively preventing it from opening entirely. This temporary fix takes roughly 20 minutes to complete, according to the automaker’s internal estimates.

  1. If GM would just stop fussing with one EV after another, maybe all these ridiculous gremlins wouldn’t have happened. Really.
Hope all these vehicles are under warranty. I bought a Ford in ’17 that was a service loaner and the warranty started the day I bought it. I just discovered that GM has gotten so cheap that the service loaner Buick we bought in November 2024 has a warranty start date of May 2024, that being the date it became a loaner. I’ll never buy a GM again. Way to earn business, GM.

  2. Nice to know that there keeps on being glitches with these trucks that we pay extremely high prices for. I have a 2023 Silverado LTZ and the radio still keeps glitching where it cuts out more than 3 times once I start the vehicle. Now this sunroof thing which I haven’t had a problem with and hope I don’t. Plus to worry about the 6.2L motor and the bearings and wonder if I am driving a ticking time bomb or not. Chevrolet was always great at making motors. Stop cheaping out and saving a 1/4 of a cent on a cheaper part as this doesn’t help anyone in the long run especially since GM can’t keep up with motor replacement demand.

  6. Use the BBB Auto Line and force mediation to require GM to buy back your vehicle and repay all finance charges you incurred. This is exactly what the BBB is for . Vehicles that Auto Makers will not repair.
