GM Taps Cassandra Garber As New Chief Sustainability Officer

GM has appointed Cassandra Garber as the automaker’s Chief Sustainability Officer. Effective on Earth Day next Monday, she will succeed Kristen Siemen in the role. Previously, Cassandra Garber had a four-year career in the Sustainability and ESG department of Dell Technologies.

“Next week, I start as the new chief sustainability officer at General Motors,” Garber said on LinkedIn. “After nearly four fantastic years at Dell Technologies, I’m now trading keyboards for dashboards. And I’m beyond thrilled.” She also shared that she’s a proud owner of a 2021 GMC Yukon XL Denali, which dutifully hauls her family of five plus two dogs.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned during my career, it’s that sustainable business is smart business,” Garber continued in her LinkedIn post. “Reducing risk, seizing innovation and growth opportunity WHILE delivering real and meaningful impact is where it’s at. It’s hard, but when done and done well, it’s transformative for both business and our world.”

Naturally, as Chief Sustainability Officer, she’ll play a role in moving GM toward a zero-emissions future. “Now I get the chance to help General Motors accelerate a zero-emissions future and drive circular-economy solutions that reduce costs and material waste,” Garber said. “GM is helping advance the EV transition, adoption of renewable energy, and much more. Thinking back to those days as a little girl walking the car lots with my family, this work truly feels like a dream!”

In addition to Dell Technologies, Garber’s resume includes sustainability positions at McKesson, 3M, Coca-Cola, and GE.

As for how GM’s all-EV strategy has evolved in recent years, GM said as recently as December of 2023 that it still plans a fully electric vehicle lineup by 2035. However, GM CEO Mary Barra said a month later that the EV transition will “take decades.” Further, Cadillac changed course on its all-electric by 2030 plan in May of 2024, but we’re nearing a moment when the Cadillac Escalade will be the luxury brand’s only ICE-powered offering.

She certainly has the corporate/business school claptrap down to weapons grade, that’s for sure.
    She’ll fit in just fine.
