A little over a year after taking the job, Tesla alumnus JP Clausen is stepping down from his position as GM Executive Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability.
“After a year of incredible experiences and growth, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave General Motors,” Clausen said in a LinkedIn post. “This wasn’t a decision I made lightly, but it makes sense for me and my family right now. Working at GM has been a defining chapter – one that challenged me, shaped me, and allowed me to contribute to vehicles that millions of people rely on every day.”
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside brilliant engineers, designers, and most importantly to me, manufacturing experts who are driving real change,” Clausen continued. “This experience has taught me what it means to build not just vehicles but trust and legacy. I have seen first-hand GM’s capability, pride, and commitment to delivering world-class products for our customers. I look forward to seeing where they take the industry next.”
“To my colleagues, mentors, and partners – thank you. I’m grateful for every mile traveled together. It’s been an honor,” he concluded.
Clausen brought extensive experience in global manufacturing and innovation to GM from his previous roles, including significant achievements at Tesla, Zymergen, Lego, and Google Data Centers. At Tesla, Clausen led the rapid scaling of EV propulsion systems at the EV producer’s Gigafactory 1.
“JP’s unique expertise in global manufacturing innovation, engineering, and operations will accelerate our ability to deliver on our vision for GM with the highest quality vehicles for our customers,” General Motors CEO Mary Barra said at the time of Clausen’s appointment. “We are excited to welcome him to the team and know that his contributions will be instrumental to our future.”
It’s uncertain at this time who will replace JP Clausen as the new GM EVP of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability following his one-year tenure.

Bet the work atmosphere was much different at gm than Tesla, thus the short tenure to a different gig.
I bet most of what he said was BS
He knows Trumps tariffs will kill GM exports or GM operations worldwide as other countries take action against Trump.
And he is getting out sooner than later.
Coming from a smaller company is a big challenge. GM is a faster and reasonable nimble for its size. Looking at Tesla's Portfolio comparison to GM, It's a lot more complex and ahead in a lot of areas that Tesla's not.
Tesla's not that old and experienced. That's a fact. There's folks that will disagree, but that's the truth...
Tesla's Portfolio really hasn't changed much Since it went prime time
“GM is a faster and reasonable nimble for its size.”
No it’s not especially if it involves any investment resources. The only exception is if it involves cost savings.
Dealing with gm’s committee bureaucracy to get things done isn’t for everyone.
Surprise, surprise! The culture?
