GM Files Patent To Develop A Motorized Display Screen

GM has filed a patent application for a motorized display screen for use in a vehicle. The application was assigned patent number US 2025/0091437 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and was published on March 20th, 2025. The GM patent application was originally submitted on September 18th, 2023, and lists two Michigan-based engineers as the inventors, including Ki Hyun Ahn and Joseph F. Szczerba.

The patent application describes a motorized display system that can automatically adjust its position and angle based on the occupant’s behavior and preferences. This system aims to create a smarter, more responsive in-vehicle display experience that enhances both usability and safety.

The system uses a system controller, an occupant monitoring system, and a microphone to interpret whether the user is attempting to interact with the display or simply view it. The occupant monitoring system can track body posture, head and hand movements, and eye direction, while the microphone allows for verbal input. Based on this information, the system determines the occupant’s intent, such as whether they are reaching for the screen or just looking at it, and adjusts the display accordingly.

When the occupant is reaching for the display, the system moves it to a lower, more accessible position to make physical interaction easier. If the occupant is only viewing the screen, the display shifts to a higher or more distant position for more comfortable viewing. The display can also rotate and tilt using a motorized arm to achieve the best orientation for the task at hand.

Notably, this system can learn and adapt over time, storing user preferences and using machine learning to improve based on past interactions, real-time feedback, environmental conditions, and the type of content that is accessed. For example, if a specific app is opened, the system can automatically move and orient the display to a position that’s optimal for that application.

Notably, the system is also versatile enough to be used in autonomous vehicles, as well as other types of vehicles, such as aircraft or marine vessels.

  1. wow this could be the ultimate vehicle screen experience. It solves almost every problem currently we deal with.

  2. I prefer a simpler manually adjustable display, just like the rear view mirror

  3. More stuff to break and create an expensive fix.

  4. Isn’t “distracted driving” the current number one cause of vehicular deaths. Why are manufacturers creating more and more “gadgets” to distract drivers. Why don’t they turn the glove box into a bar and get it all over with. If you want to watch a screen sit in your living room or office and use your laptop. At least you won’t die or kill someone else’s loved one while doing it. If you NEED GPS you’re just plain lazy. Learn to read a map and plan your course before you start to drive. Please don’t insult my intelligence and try and convince me you don’t watch whatever screen you currently have while you’re driving. EVERY vehicle should be made with a built in cell phone “blocker” while the key is on.
Vehicles should stay as simple A-B transportation and not mobile movie theatres.

    1. The solution is full self driving. So thay drivers can sleep and fully trust the car while they endanger lives around them.

  5. maybe with so many vehicles leaving people stranded on the side of the road due to fuel modules, bad lifter, transmissions etc Mary thought this was a good idea to help spend the time waiting for a tow truck

  6. Good. Can it fold itself into the dash, never to be seen again?

  7. They had a motorized screen. It’s was in the first ATS. The screen popped up when you needed the GPS, and retracted into the dash when you didn’t need anything other than the radio and clock. Still my favorite dash! Clean and functional.

  8. That’s a pretty fancy feature for an Encore GX.

  9. They’re doing this because BYD has a screen you can position as landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical) in their higher end models. To me its another unnecessary item to just break. Hopefully it stays in Cadillacs.
