GM is expanding its in-vehicle software offerings with a new update that enables video streaming and gaming across a wider range of vehicles. The update will be available for later-model-year EVs equipped with a Google Built-In infotainment system, further underlining the automaker’s push to expand in-vehicle entertainment options, in particular with new electric vehicles. In-vehicle apps will include Amazon Prime Video, Max, Google Chrome, and Angry Birds.
Per a report from InsideEVs, the new infotainment feature initially launched in vehicles like the Cadillac Optiq and Chevy Blazer EV SS, but will now roll out to additional models like the Chevy Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV, and non-SS-variants of the Chevy Blazer EV. To note, the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban also offer in-vehicle video streaming services. Looking ahead, the full feature rollout is expected to include a vast swath of new GM models, given the similarity in the underlying software platform throughout GM’s new vehicle lineup.
The new apps will be accessible via the “Pass Time While Parked” section in the Google Play Store, and will only be accessible when the vehicle is stationary, such as during charging sessions, in order to ensure driver safety. An OnStar subscription with data is required to run the new feature, or alternatively, users can link their phone and use data through a local hotspot instead.
It’s unlikely the first-generation Chevy Bolt EV will offer the feature given the Bolt does not offer access to the Google Play Store. However, GM has indicated that future iterations of the Bolt will transition to the new software ecosystem, potentially bringing the streaming experience to the next-gen model as well.
A GM spokesperson noted that a significant software update is scheduled for release by the end of April.
Several other automakers are also moving to support a greater range of in-vehicle entertainment options, including Tesla, Rivian, and Mercedes-Benz.

Please tell me how that car has heated and ventilated seats separate options. Mine are grouped together and I have to click in to select cooled or heated.
Hi James. Mines are separate on my 2024 blazer EV RS AWD. I had the chevy dealership do a software update.
My ’24 RS AWD had the single option till I had the dealer update everything. Then I had the separate controls for the seats.
Wow, so no update for the Hummer EV?
I am super happy to hear about us finally getting the ability to use video apps while in park/charging. For us not to have it – on an ANDROID SYSTEM – was a travesty.
I will enjoy my Lyriq far more with the ability.
