In much the same way as for Q4 2024, General Motors again presented a partial sales report stating that GM China sales grew in Q1 2025.
The automaker’s Chinese subsidiary presented a very limited sales release, the second consecutive time that it has done so, reducing the already scarce amount of information shared typically during its sales reports in China. The company stated that GM China sales saw positive growth during the first quarter of the 2025 thanks to fully electric and hybrid vehicles from the two joint ventures it operates in the country currently.
“Strong performance in Q1 has set a solid foundation for our sustainable and profitable growth throughout 2025,” said GM Senior VP and President of GM China, Steve Hill. “We will continue to build momentum by enhancing product competitiveness, delivering exceptional customer experiences, and exploring new growth opportunities,” he added.
Specifically, the automaker reported that GM China sales surpassed 442,000 units during the first three months of the year via the SAIC-GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint ventures it maintains in the Chinese market with SAIC Motor, its strategic partner in that market. Following what appears to be a new sales communications strategy for China, GM did not reveal individual figures for each subdivision.
Despite the newfound lack of transparency, the GM China sales result represents a very slight increase of less than a single digit compared to the 441,100 units the company sold during Q1 2024. As such, the first quarter of 2025 represents the second consecutive quarter of growth for GM China, following Q4 2024. Furthermore, The General claims it has now recorded three consecutive quarters of market share gains.
The stable figures come amid widespread instability among foreign manufacturers in China, and GM’s improvement was driven by electrified vehicles from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Wuling, and Baojun. Among these, the only specific numbers GM mentioned was 87,000 sales of the Wuling MINI EV and 24,000 units of the Buick GL8s. GM’s release also mentioned substantial increases for the Buick LaCrosse and Buick Envision Plus, but didn’t provide exact figures.
