Chevy Onix Production Resumes At GM Gravataí Plant In Brazil

After suspending production at the factory for a month, General Motors has resumed production of the Chevy Onix at the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil.

The automaker has confirmed it has resumed production at the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil, which is responsible for exclusively manufacturing the current second-generation Chevy Onix in both body styles. Production of the subcompact vehicle recently resumed after a notable 30-day hiatus, during which assembly at the facility was suspended from February 17th to March 16th due to technical adjustments.

As such, Chevy Onix production at the Brazilian plant resumed on Monday, March 17th, with two shifts as the company prepares for upcoming adjustments to its production line operations in Gravataí. Previously, the manufacturer announced an agreement with the union for a partial layoff of some plant employees, effective April 22nd, seeking to adjust Onix inventory to current demand and update production lines.

While the company did not disclose any data on the number of Chevy Onix units it didn’t produce during the suspension of operations, union sources estimate that the GM Gravataí plant cut production of around 17,000 units of GM Brazil’s best-selling model since the shutdown began in mid-February. This figure is estimated based on the production rate of 900 units per day reported by the union president and the nearly 20 business days of the shutdown.

The ongoing production adjustments of the Chevy Onix at the Gravataí complex are a reflection of the retail difficulties GM is facing after more than five years of selling the vehicle without any equipment adjustments or major updates. In fact, the current Onix remains exactly the same as when it was first launched in the South American country in September 2019, and for that reason, it has lost competitiveness against its revamped rivals.

The company’s Brazilian subsidiary is finally working on an updated version of the Chevy Onix this year, which is expected to receive exterior design tweaks, a new interior layout, and more technological equipment. The upcoming updated Onix is one of five planned launches from Chevrolet Brazil and will be launched in the coming months to begin marketing as a 2026 model-year vehicle.

    1. They’re gonna have to, these reject models for the American market will end up being GMs saving grace, they’ll add 10k to cover tariffs, put in some safety upgrades, add some extra profit and sell for the mid-20s, because that’s that’s all they’ll be able to move…. Nobody is gonna buy an entry Trax for 27k after tariffs kick in.
