Canada Retaliates With 25-Percent Import Tariffs For U.S.-Built Vehicles

A 25 percent tariff on automobiles imported to the United States went into effect on Thursday, and Canada is matching it. According to Automotive News, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told the press on Thursday that Canada will respond with “carefully calibrated” import tariffs on the automotive sector.

A 25 percent tariff will be imposed on automobiles imported from the U.S. into Canada, but there will be no new import tariffs on auto parts.

“The 80-year period when the United States embraced the mantle of global economic leadership when it forged alliances rooted in trust and mutual respect and championed the free and open exchange of goods and services, is over,” said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “While this is a tragedy, it is also the new reality.”

According to the Canadian Automotive Partnership Council, about 40 percent of the cars sold in Canada in 2024 were assembled in the United States, and U.S.-built cars represent about half of the value of the cars sold in Canada. That amounts to approximately 750,000 vehicles and tens of billions of dollars in value. Conversely, an analysis from Cars.com estimates that 4.2 percent of the cars in new vehicle inventory in the U.S. are made in Canada.

The new import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump are already impacting Canadian auto manufacturing. Unifor Local 444 announced on Wednesday that the Stellantis plant it represents in Windsor, Ontario, which produces Chrysler minivans and the Dodge Charger Daytona, will shut down for at least two weeks.

Unifor suggested that Canada match America’s 25 percent car tariff but refrain from adding new tariffs to parts. Carney said Canada would use the revenue from the tariff, estimated to be $8 billion annually, to support affected autoworkers.

  1. 25% tarriff on vehicles that “are non USMCA compliant.” They can add that to the same list with the Manatee meat and other virtue signaling insignificant tarrifs.

Seriously, what’s with it and these gutless lefties all over the globe??? Threatless tarrifs, posting military aid to proxy wars, tweeting pleas to boko haram. Have they just all peaked in high school and are divas who just are addicted to attention despite who gets hurt in the process?

      1. The tarrifs only applies to “non USMCA cars”

        IE, it’s pointless.

This follows on the heels of tarrifs on other pointless items like Manatee meat. Carney is shooting for like instead of results. Canada has yet to actually implement a tarrifs that will have any effect.

You think you’re winning the argument, you’re not though. Alogrithims on more advanced comment systems are literally filtering this stuff out. You’re irrelevant.

The left can’t face facts, and will always complain about Trump no matter how well everything is going, or what he does. Heck, I’m convinced Trump could cure CANCER and it wouldn’t be good enough, and find something to complain about!

  3. Trump has made it clear in the rose garden speech that the preference to the tariffs is a reciprocal drop in tariffs on both ends. In an interview with Sharyl Attkisson he has made it clear that he prefers no tariffs with any trading partners.

This is even echoed by Doug Ford who has said this morning, he was willing to drop all tariffs so long as Trump did the same, and prefers dialogue over escalation. So what happened? Why is Carney simply striking back? I guess tariffs aren’t so bad if Carney prefers to wreck his own economy to defend his own tariffs than to negotiate with dialogue. No wonder Quebec wants to leave.

    1. There is clearly a disconnect between the provinces that seem to want dialogue over Ottawa that prefers saving face. Must have something to do with the upcoming election?

  4. The only way to deal with a bully is to punch him in the face, which is what Carney is doing. Appeasement and sucking up always fails, look at all the pathetic Republicans in congress who know these tariffs are insane, but won’t stand up to Trump. They care more about their reelection than your retirement account or job. Trump is literally the only person on earth, along with his crazy advisor Navarro who thinks Tariffs are a good idea. If you support Trump’s tariffs, you are officially a Trump cult member and would back anything he does. Trump and Navarro, 2 senile 80 year old codgers destroying the global economy and trading system.

    1. Escalation ensures failure quicker and harder than dialogue “appeasement” as you say. Which is what the left didn’t understand with the whole Ukraine war as the previous administration was escalating against a well armed a nuclear superpower.

Sorry. But I’d rather dialogue over nuclear or economic fallout because at the end of the day, Carney and Biden have their bunkers they can hide in. We don’t.

    1. Stellantis has bigger problems than tariffs. Ever since Iacocca left Chrysler has basically only been kept alive through life support. And don’t get me started on the Italian brands side of that company.

Amateur hour at the White House. One question…is the tRump clown car a tariff free vehicle?

I doubt it because you have TDS and a very frail man who can’t even define what a woman is!! You leftist have lost it. The guy has been in office for 80 some days and you’re losing your minds, yet, WE as conservatives had to deal with 4 years of absolute chaos!!! I bet you weren’t saying anything then were you??!?!?!
