Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The substantial 54 percent increase in Buick Envista sales during Q1 2025 places the Tri-Shield brand’s entry-level subcompact crossover in 12th place among 20 nameplates in its segment when ranked by sales volume.

The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) remained solidly at the top with a 57 percent jump to 59,021 deliveries. The Subaru Crosstrek followed in second place with a 14 percent bump to 43,612 units, while the third place Honda HR-V posted an eight percent uptick to 40,944 units. The Jeep Compass took fourth with a 15 percent rise to 31,730 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the Bow Tie brand’s second segment entry, rounded out the top five with a 21 percent upswing for 29,323 deliveries.

Like Chevy, Buick offers two models in this space:

  • The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), which shares its version of the VSS-F platform with the Trailblazer, placed ninth with a 53 percent swell to 20,408 units, and
  • The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), which shares its version of the VSS-F platform with the Trax, saw sales grow 54 percent to 14,862 units, placing 12th in the segment

The Envista’s sales performance earned it a four percent segment share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The Trax led with a 15 percent segment share, up four percentage points, while the Crosstrek and HR-V each maintained an 11 percent share, and the Compass maintained an eight percent share. The Trailblazer posted an eight percent share, up percentage point, and the Encore GX held a five percent share, also up one percentage point.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 13 percent to 389,615 units during Q1 2025, meaning the Envista far outperformed the segment average.

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista and Encore GX – accounted for a combined 123,614 deliveries and a cumulative 32 percent segment share, to place The General solidly at the top, accounting for nearly third of all segment sales.

By comparison, the four Stellantis entries – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Hornet, and Fiat 500X – earned a combined 36,282 deliveries for an 11 percent segment share. Notably, Honda, which sells just one model here, the HR-V, actually beat Stellantis by two deliveries. Subaru also outpaced the automaker with the Crosstrek.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 50,851 deliveries and a 13 percent segment share, placing the Korean conglomerate far behind GM but in second place overall.

KIA SOUL -9.44% 11,277 12,452

An argument could be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 39,574 cumulative deliveries for a 10 percent segment share, bumping the conglomerate to fourth place overall behind Stellantis.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 21 entries, though one of those models has been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining sales volumes of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in the following order:

  • GM – 32 percent share, four models
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 13 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 10 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 11 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Nissan – seven percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, one model
  • Mazda – five percent share, one model
  • VW – four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – two percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales volumes and higher segment shares, but those with a single model, like Subaru and Honda, actually manage to outsell automakers that offer several models.

The GM Authority Take

The Buick Envista, which will complete its second year on sale next quarter, posted solid gains, but it is no longer the Tri-Shield brand’s best-selling model among four models, as refreshed models gain traction, such as the Encore GX and the larger Buick Envision. In fact, the Envista only outsold the large three-row, next-generation Buick Enclave in Q1 2025.

Meanwhile, the Encore’s platform mate, the Chevy Trax, leads the mainstream subcompact crossover space and those two models, combined with the other entries from The General in this space, namely the Chevy Trailblazer and Encore GX, helped the automaker reign supreme in this crowded marketplace.

About Buick Envista

The 2025 Buick Envista adds two new standard features previously offered as optional on the first-ever 2024 Buick Envista, namely rear park assist and the remote vehicle starter system. It also gets a new paint color called Aquamarine Blue Metallic to indirectly replace Sunrise Red Metallic.

It gains an E85-compatible turbocharged 1.2L I3 LBP engine, making it a flex-fuel capable vehicle. Notably, the 2025 Envista is not capable of towing a trailer.

Here is everything that is new and different for the 2025 Buick Envista vs. the 2024 model.

Here are all the 2025 Envista paint colors, the interior colorways, and available wheels.

  2. I personally own a 2024 Envista and IMO they hit it out of the park with this model and the Trax. This was made possible by our global partnership so I don’t mind an American nameplate like Buick being made out of country, this shows innovative partnership for the good of everybody.

        1. Having a bad day are we?

I’ll try to explain the situation at a third grade level so you can understand. At one time not too long ago Buicks were designed, engineered, and most were built in the United States (US). GM directly employed thousands of US residents directly in their assembly and parts plants building Buicks. Thousands of US residents worked in the supplier plants supporting production of Buicks. Thousands more were employed serving the folks who worked in these factories and facilities. These US residents were paid in dollars- dollars that were used to buy homes, support families, purchase cars and trucks (many of which were GM) vehicles. The economic spinoff was measured in the billions of dollars
Now the Buick division consists of 80 percent captive imports much like the GEO Division of the 1990s. These workers cannot afford to buy the vehicle s they build let alone buy consumer goods. The entire value chain and the billions of dollars of economic benefits it created in the US is gone.

I would consider an Envista, but I’m sorry, when I’m spending $30k plus for a vehicle, it will be US made.

  4. I still wish they had gone more upscale with the Envista Avenir while retaining the entry level trims to preserve volume sales. Put in missing luxury features on the Avenir such as dual zone climate control and rear vents. At least the 1.3L engine optional, preferably the 1.5L like the China version.

    1. The Chinese Avenir gets a lot of stuff the NA Avenir don’t, which is infuriating and explains why gm is now lower cased. No boldness in direction to give the US consumers surprise and delight features.
