A 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali that looks as inconspicuous as any other is headed to the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction later this month, but it’s hiding a big secret. It’s actually an armored SUV customized by Inkas Armored.
The only sign that this Yukon XL is different is the extra ride height, which is more noticeable over the rear wheels than the front. This SUV has 360-degree perimeter protection all around the body, including multi-layer ballistic glass. In addition to the armoring inside the body, there’s also protection around the battery, ECM, and fuel tank. It even has reinforced hinges to handle the extra weight of the doors and windows.
It does become obvious that this GMC Yukon XL Denali is an armored SUV when you open the liftgate and find an armored bulkhead partition with a swing-out door.. It has its own window so the driver can still see out of the back of the SUV.
This armored Yukon also has a run-flat system that goes farther than regular run-flat tires. Solid polycarbonate inserts reinforce the rims’ structure to enable continued vehicle operation and driving stability if tires are punctured.
Power comes from a 6.2L V8 L87 engine rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Output is sent to the rear or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. It was originally rated at 14 city/20 highway/16 combined mpg, but given the substantial weight added to this Yukon, we expect this one to be even less efficient than a stock example.
The GMC Yukon XL has always been an excellent vehicle for families who need truck-like capabilities, and the Denali model adds some luxury to the equation. If you think that sounds good but want some extra protection for you and your passengers, place your bids at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach, which will take place at the South Florida Fairgrounds, April 24th-26th.
