Trump To Raise Canadian Steel And Aluminum Import Tariff To 50 Percent

President Donald Trump announced his intention to raise tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum by an additional 25 percent, bringing the total to 50 percent. The change is slated to go into effect on Wednesday.

Doubling the tariff on steel and aluminum imported from Canada to the U.S. is a response to Ontario Premier Doug Ford implementing a 25 percent tax on electricity exports to the U.S. Ontario supplies energy to three U.S. states: Minnesota, New York, and Michigan.

Premier Ford apologized to the American people on MSNBC for President Trump imposing “an unprovoked attack on our country, on families, on jobs.” He also threatened to cut off Ontario’s energy supply to the U.S. entirely in a CNBC interview if Trump “continues to hurt Canadian families.”

U.S. dependence on Canadian energy has decreased in recent years. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. imported over 27,000 gWh of electricity from Canada in 2024. That number was approximately 60,000 as recently as 2017. It’s difficult to estimate exactly how much of that energy comes specifically from Ontario.

Meanwhile, steel and aluminum exports are a vital part of Canada’s economy, and the U.S. accounts for approximately 90 percent of those exports. If U.S. manufacturers shift more toward domestic suppliers for steel and aluminum due to tariff costs, it could significantly impact the Canadian economy.

An anonymous White House official told CNBC that Trump’s tariff escalation was intended to “lay down the gauntlet” in response to Ford’s new tax on Canadian energy coming into the States. On Truth Social, Trump demanded that Canada drop the “Anti-American Farmer Tariff” on U.S. dairy products. He also threatened to “substantially increase” tariffs on cars imported from Canada which will “essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada,” according to Trump. The president also repeated his calls for the U.S. to absorb Canada as the 51st state.

  1. Ford F-series sources their aluminum from Canada? If so, they’re toast.

  2. There’s an article on Ford Authority; Ford gets 90% of its steel from the U.S., and 10% from Canada. Aluminum is also not that impacted for Ford.

    1. Ford has a partnership with AK steel that has a plant adjacent to their river rouge plant. They get their steel essentially made onsite in Michigan.

  4. This article is infuriating, mostly from PM Ford. Apologizing to the American people for the guy we elected? Because C@nada is screwing us over royally and has for decades! I’m really pi$$ed at this, and whole at C@nada at this point. C@nada is the best freind that slept with your girlfriend at this point and both better grovel now cause this is ridiculous. All we asked was to even out the t@rrifs and stop the flow of drugs. They doubled down on not doing that, we told their there would be counter T@rrifs, they increased theirs. We delayed ours as a show of good will, they doubled down and now are threatening to cut off some of our power 😡 I’m fine with crushing them financially now TBFFH.

Canadian Friends on this forum, you better not vote liber@l next election and get Pierre Poilievre as PM, or your screwed. The Canadian liber@l party is the Bolshevists at this point!

    1. Steve 29, don’t get angry with Canada. It’s our govt and business world that has let this happen. Trump signed the contracts that allowed this to happen 8 years ago. With Trump making comments about them becoming the 51 st state, that’s got the Canadians fired up. We would be too if someone wanted to take our country over.

    2. You’re clearly getting your info from right-wing US media. Painful to read this nonsense. It’s also okay to use the letters on your keyboard instead of @ symbols.

Both sides agreed to pause…then Trump opened his mouth again and made new tariff threats. Guess what happens after that? Now both sides are pausing again to chat this week.

But after all this flip-flopping Trump nonsense, I hope the power does come off on you lot. You idiots need a wake up call.

      2. Dumb@$$, no, tr ump paused the car tarrifs, c@nada kept their, then added the 25% power one. My posts was before C@nada blinked, and I’m grateful…. For Trum p. I’m still not happy as C@nada still charges us a 250% on dairy, and is unapologetic about how much they have benefited. A little gratitude goes a long way. Trum p is an @$$ cause he’s dealing with @$$es, and it’s the only way to get through to these @holes

        1. You’ve done zero research on this. In the USMCA, which anyone can read at anytime, Canada outlined tariffs which could be imposed if quotas reached a certain level. That level has not been reached since the 2018 signing of the USMCA, so you’re claim about 250% dairy tariff is BS because not 1$ has been paid by the US for Canadian dairy tariffs. And to top it off, this is all clearly outlined in the agreement signed by …………..wait for it………..DONALD TRUMP! if you’re pissed at the agreement, look at who represented the US and signed it. I understand people just take Trump at his word and don’t check into anything, but cmon, this is all info so easy to find. Just go to the source. This is just another example of my Canada should look elsewhere for other stable trading partners.

Steve 29, is threatening you, if you don’t vote for the candidate of his choice.
Look who he voted for. There is no possible way you could vote this bad.
Some Americans from the southern states still think they’re fighting the civil war. We relate more to Canadians than we do to them.
Steve 29, the civil war is over. Y’all’ lost.

  7. I am Canadian and I know that goods exported to USA are shipped with 200% tariffs ! It has been that way for years … I am not on the side of Canadians ! 25%, 50% … is nothing compared to 200%+ tariffs. Our canadian governments have been screwing the hell out of USA for decades !. My country just need to be more productive, attract companies with less regulation and income taxes etc… !

    1. Ontario hockey fans, come see us.
April 15th 2025 is the last time this season the Leafs will play the Sabres in Buffalo.
We don’t even mind if you root for the Leafs.
There will be more Leafs fans than Sabres fans in the arena anyway.
I know things are expensive in Canada, especially closer to Toronto.
The Sabres are in last place. Tickets should be cheap and easy to get.
I miss Don Cherry on Hockey Night in Canada.
I wonder what he would be saying about all of this baloney.

Don would never spray paint his face orange and put on cotton candy hair.

When Trump is nothing but a footnote as the worst US president in history, people will still smile when you mention Don Cherry.
