This Chevy Silverado Through-HDMI Exhaust Is Ugly, But Certainly Unique

The fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 launched for the 2019 model year, riding on the GM T1 platform and introducing, among other things, a completely reworked exterior design. One of the more divisive styling updates was the adoption of new rear exhaust finishers, a feature that some fans dubbed “HDMI ports” due to their trapezoidal shape. While some welcomed the angular look, others took issue with it, and now, one owner has taken the issue into their own hands.

Spotted driving through traffic, this blue Chevy Silverado RST has undergone a rather unconventional modification to its rear exhaust setup. While the factory HDMI-style bezels remain in place, the actual exhaust pipes now exit through the trapezoidal openings via a pair of aggressively down-turned custom tips. These extended metal tubes protrude beyond the factory bumper, and definitely make the truck stand out. Whether or not it stands out in a good way, well, we’ll leave that up to you.

To our eyes, the pipe diameter isn’t exactly subtle, while the overall shape matches to the factory finishers to give the appearance of a tongue sticking out of a mouth. Beyond the exhaust, this Chevy Silverado includes several other noticeable modifications. A full-width chrome tool box sits in the bed just behind the cab, while aftermarket wheel arch trim with rivet accents surrounds all four fenders. Additionally, the Silverado is fitted with mud flaps and side steps.

While the setup isn’t exactly our cup of tea, it’s certainly unique. Indeed, GM’s HDMI-style exhaust ports have become something of a polarizing feature among fans. In fact, some owners have embraced the meme fully by adding “HDMI 1” and “HDMI 2” stickers above their exhausts, as GM Authority covered previously.

Looking ahead, GM is expected to retire the HDMI-style finishers with the launch of the next-generation Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra for the 2027 model year, opting for a quad-tip exhaust layout reminiscent of the C8 Corvette Stingray. In fact, the updated designed has already been spotted on GM SUVs like the 2024 Traverse, 2025 Tahoe, and 2025 Suburban.

In any event, how do you feel about this custom exhaust setup? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Judging by the trailer hitch, I’d say he’s trying to direct the exhaust down rather than straight back at the trailer. Not the most elegant solution, though.
