This Chevy Silverado Driver Probably Regrets Not Getting 4WD: Video

A Chevy Silverado driver’s attempt to beat traffic ended in disaster when their truck got stuck in mud off the side of a highway, creating a situation that nearly led to a major accident involving a distracted tractor trailer.

The video, captured by a traffic camera on I-40 in Arkansas, shows it all go down in about three minutes.

Chevy Silverado gets stuck in mud on the side of the freeway.

The footage shows slow-moving traffic in the eastbound lanes of I-40 during what appears to be sunset. Seemingly frustrated with the gridlock, the Chevy Silverado driver veers off the highway, attempting to cut through a muddy divider to bypass traffic. Unfortunately, the shortcut doesn’t exactly bear fruit.

After briefly pausing for traffic on an embankment, the driver hits the throttle in the hopes of smoothly merging back onto the road. Instead, the rear tires dig deep into the mud, leaving the truck completely stuck. Had the driver opted for a 4WD model – or simply stayed on the pavement – they may have avoided this mess entirely.

The video then speeds up, showing the driver rocking the truck back and forth, desperately trying to get out of the muck, but the rear wheels only spin deeper and deeper into the ground.

Around the 35-second mark, the video takes a dangerous new turn. A tractor trailer is seen barreling down the left lane at high speed, seemingly distracted by the stranded Silverado. The driver doesn’t notice the stopped traffic ahead until the last possible second. To avoid a catastrophic collision, the driver swerves onto the muddy shoulder, barely missing the cars ahead.

Now, there are two stranded vehicles – the Chevy Silverado and the tractor trailer.

As the footage continues, a dually pickup truck arrives to tow out the Silverado, while a fire truck blocks traffic to prevent further chaos.

Shortly after, another fire truck arrives to assist the tractor trailer, officially turning the shortcut attempt into a full-blown incident.

    1. what difference would engine size make? When you’re in mud like that with a 2wd, all more hp is gonna do is spin the tires faster, but you won’t be going anywhere. His 2nd mistake was stopping. He had momentum on his side. But once he stopped to let the other vehicle go by, he was done. His 1st mistake was trying it in the first place.

    1. Exactly! Of all the places to try and drive through, especially with a 2wd, why would you go through the area with most visible standing water and mud. People are just dumb.

  7. Not sure if 4wd would have gotten them out of that mud that deep from a standing start?

    1. Agreed. And no amount of drive wheels is going to help you if you don’t have the right TIRES for the job! There’s no way to tell in the video whether or not the truck had all-terrain tires, but having those would’ve definitely helped. In any case, this was NOT a good idea.

Nice block of the scene from FD. Police and Medics on the opposite side exposed to traffic
