A new viral video captures a chaotic scene as multiple vehicles struggle to navigate a steep, icy mountain road. Among the unlucky drivers caught in the treacherous conditions is the owner of a Toyota SUV, which loses traction and crashes into the rear of a stationary GMC Sierra pickup truck, with the Sierra’s tailgate puncturing the SUV as a result of the impact.
The video, which is only about a minute long, opens to show a snow-covered mountain pass, with lots of the white stuff blanketing the road, surrounding vehicles, and the steep mountainside. To the left, the terrain slopes sharply upward, while to the right, a drop-off is protected by a roadside barrier. Several vehicles appear stranded along the roadside, having already succumbed to the slick conditions.
Early in the clip, a Buick Encore cautiously enters the frame, appearing to remain in control as it drifts toward the snowbank. The camera operator – who is presumably one of the bystanders affected by the conditions – captures more vehicles slowly sliding down the icy road, their tires locked in a futile attempt to regain control. The scene grows increasingly chaotic as additional vehicles continue to lose traction, inching toward disaster.
“Slow it down!” the person filming shouts as an SUV attempts to navigate a bend in the road. But it’s too late – the vehicle slides helplessly on the ice. Suddenly, a Toyota SUV enters the frame at a higher rate of speed, prompting onlookers to scramble out of the way. Within seconds, the out-of-control SUV crashes directly into the open tailgate of a parked GMC Sierra pickup, puncturing the SUV in dramatic fashion.
With little to no traction on steep, icy roads, even vehicles with all-wheel drive struggle to maintain control. In such conditions, drivers are advised to use chains, studded tires, or – better yet – stay off the roads altogether.

Around here (Southern California), we assume the bad drivers are always a toyota. While BMW and tesla drivers are well known for aggressive driving, toyota owners just seem to be clueless drivers, as if driving is not something they like, but something they have to do so they buy a soulless appliance.
Dsuupr: You hit the nail on the head. 100%.
Tag, you’re it.
Anyone driving in those conditions should have their heads examined. You not only risk your own life, but the ones of those around you.
Jackasses who drive to fast in bad! weather. Should know better.
Having been a police officer for a decade many years ago, and in a snow state, we often saw this type of stuff non-stop. Especially on the first snow of the season.
Who were normally the first in the ditch or accidents? The trucks and SUV’s with AWD/4WD.
What drivers just don’t seem to get is that AWD/4WD only helps in forward and/or reward motion. It does nothing for sliding sideways or once you begin to spin out of control. As a nation (USA), we really need way better driver education courses.
I have been in conditions like this. The roads can be fine then you run into an area where it has iced up.
Often there is no where to stop or turn around.
This was not speed here this was just pure ice. Not all tires deal well with as they do with snow.
The worst issue is so many drive on worn out tires. I generally go to the back roads as I can get through as other get stuck on main roads with nearly bald tires.
