More EVs Now Eligible For GM Family First Employee Discount Program

The GM Family First employee discount program is now offering additional cash allowance on all of its EV models except the bespoke Cadillac Celestiq. The cash allowance ranges from $2,500 for models on the BEV3 platform up to $4,500 for BT1-based EVs. Here’s the full list.

The GM Family First program allows family and friends of General Motors employees to take advantage of the automaker’s employee discount, which is typically around 20 percent off MSRP.

GM recently increased the number of discounts employees and retirees can dole out to friends and relatives from six to nine, but there’s a catch. Four are for ICE-powered vehicles, and five are for EVs. Previously, it was six total, regardless of powertrain.

The EV Employee Allowance program was first launched in December 2023 to promote the Cadillac Lyriq to GM employees, and it’s since expanded to the automaker’s whole EV lineup. “Since the initial program proved successful, we adjusted the allowances to provide more opportunities for employees and retirees to provide discounts to more customers,” GM said in an email to the Detroit Free Press. “We routinely make adjustments to our allowance programs based on feedback from our employees and retirees.”

The program has proven successful at selling EVs to General Motors employees, friends, and relatives. Joe Hill of Shea Buick GMC Chevrolet in Flint, Michigan told the Detroit Free Press that every EV his dealership sells is sold with an employee discount. “My best customers that buy EVs are employees. They know the technology, they charge it when they come to work, and those folks like them,” Hill said. “If it’s free to charge it at work, and you’re here 10 hours a day, why wouldn’t you buy one?”

  3. Here’s an estimate of the following resources that the US and China each control. Does this help some of you see why EVs and “green tech” using rare earth resources favor China so much over the US? And why continuing down this “EV or nothing” road is foolish for the US and “US companies”?

    Resource Unit US China
    Oil Billion barrels 45 25
Natural Gas Trillion cubic meters 14.3 6.57
Coal Billion metric tons 250 139
Uranium Thousand metric tons 309 157
    Gold Metric tons 8,133 2,279
Rare Earths Million metric tons 2 44

    1. Also, while the US has 2 million metric tons of rare earth reserves (again, vs China’s 44), China controls over 90% of global processing, affecting supply chain dynamics.

      1. LOL Look up the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine in the US. Also the USGS just found a GIGANTIC deposit of Lithium in SW Arkansas.

There are also several Rare Earth deposits the US can get from Friendlier Nations both north and sound of us and we would never need to rely on China ever.
