2021 Cup Series champion Kyle Larson is going to be a familiar name this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He’s trying his hand at all three national series in one fell swoop, and he’s off to a hot start. He recovered from a late-race spin to put the No. 07 NASCAR Chevy Silverado RST across the line first in Friday’s Truck Series race.
Larson’s race appeared to be over when he spun out with 45 laps left on the board. He dropped out of the top 20, putting him at a disadvantage as the checkered flag loomed, but Larson was undeterred. He was a man on a mission, picking off the trucks in front of him one by one.
The No. 07 NASCAR Chevy Silverado was blisteringly fast. So fast, in fact, that Larson caught leader Layne Riggs with just two laps left. The No. 38 Ford F-150 was no match for Larson, surrendering the lead after a brief fight. By the time the checkers waved, though, Larson had left the field in another zip code, finishing 1.340 seconds ahead of Riggs at the line.
“I wasn’t exactly sure if I could get back up there,” said Larson. “I didn’t have the restart I wanted, took a little bit too long to start picking them off and then just got ripping the wall and it paid dividends for me in [turns] one and two.”
However, things might have looked different if the No. 11 Toyota TRD Tundra of Corey Heim, the race’s most dominant competitor, hadn’t suffered a mechanical issue in the closing laps. The race truck lost power several times, relegating him to a third place finish and opening the door for Larson to cruise by.
“Not sure what happened to the 11 [Heim], but that worked out in our favor for sure,” Larson said. “I don’t think I would have gotten to him [otherwise]. Obviously, I would have gotten to second, probably, but that would have been tough to get to him. That last run was a lot of fun.”
Tyler Ankrum’s No. 18 NASCAR Chevy finished fourth, followed by the No. 19 Silverado of Daniel Hemric in fifth.
