Here’s How Much The 2025 Chevy Suburban Can Tow

The 2025 Chevy Suburban debuts a mid-cycle refresh for the Bow Tie’s full-size SUV model, heralding a significant overhaul of exterior styling, plenty of new tech, and a new engine option. Along with these updates come changes to the Suburban’s towing capacity, especially with a new powerplant in the mix. Here, GM Authority is giving you an in-depth look at how much the sport-utility can haul.

Starting with the groundwork, the 2025 Chevy Suburban has two gasoline engine options, specifically the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 providing 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. For diesel power, the turbocharged 3.0L I6 LZ0 Duramax engine developing 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque replaces the outgoing 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine, offering 10 percent more horsepower and 7.6 percent additional torque.

Axle ratio for the 2025 Suburban is 3.23 for all configurations, while drivetrains include 2WD and 4WD.

Now that we’ve covered the propulsion basics, here’s a full exploration of the 2025 Chevy Suburban towing capacities:

1. Optional Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT).

As revealed in this table, the maximum towing capacity for the 2025 Chevy Suburban is 8,200 pounds for the V8 L84 gasoline engine combined with 2WD. In order to achieving this level of towing capacity, the SUV needs to be equipped with the optional Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT) as well.

This maximum towing capacity is a 100-pound decrease from the 8,300-pound max rating offered by the 2024 Chevy Suburban. Meanwhile, for diesel units, the 2025 Suburban offers a 100-pound increase, with the LZ0 upping the maximum from that offered by the now-retired LM2 turbodiesel.

Among numerous other changes and updates, the refreshed 2025 Chevy Suburban also gets a narrow price increase, though this is under 1 percent, with prices hiked $300 or $500 depending on trim.

Better ride and handling is offered by refinements made to the multilink rear suspension design, while under the sheet metal, the 2025 Suburban continues to ride on the GM T1 platform, which also underpins other GM full-size, long-wheelbase sport-utility vehicle models. Production takes place at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.

  1. You could tow more with a 1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon. What’s the use of having a Suburban these days? GM is effectively making the marque obsolete.

    1. No, it would tow the snot out of an ol’ Roadmaster. It’s the rating that’s changed. To give an equivalent example, you Google the max towing capacity of the 9t60 transmission in the2018-2024 Chevy traverse it comes back at 6300lbs max towing. The engine is the same as in the Colorado rated to to 7100, but the “SUV” itself is rate at only 5000, and that is down from the prior generation which was rated at 5500, despite the weaker frame and driveline. Why? The current SUV’s are rated while fully loaded, IE, 8 obese passengers, a hatch full of their junk and a THULE rack to boot. If you were to chassis cab the suburban, it would tow 10,000lbs using the SAE J2807 rules, which are very conservative, if you remember early 2K F150’s being tested with an empty fuel tank and no spare tire or rear seats to max their pre J2807 ratings. Rating this SUV like we did in the 90’s, it probably tow 12-13000lbs.

  2. Needs a 3.45 or 3.73 get some good towing ,like to see a 2 row custom trail boss for us who don’t want or need a 3 row luxury family school bus .less power -luxury car bits= more payload and towing put utility back into sports utility vehicle

    1. Agreed. I want to see the suburban return to a solid rear axle as well, with a custom trim, 2.7 engine, (prefer the V8, but whatever get the costs down gets it down), vinyl 3 row bench seats and basic 4×4 package, just for us who work off road and need to bring the crew and their junk along.

  3. Zed- The 1996 Buick Roadmaster could tow 7,000 pounds. I know you miss your Buick-but time has passed it. People do not want a 20 foot long station wagon-but an SUV that rides better, tows better, and overall does everything better than a 1996 Roadmaster station wagon.

  5. where is the suburban 2500 or 3500, we need one of those with the 6.6L gas engine or 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel engine with the Alison trans. and then give it like a 15,000-20,000-pound towing capacity. Wouldn’t y’all agree.
