Here May Be Why Your Chevy Trax Has Transmission Shudder And Noise Issues

Some 2024 Chevy Trax owners are reporting a transmission shudder or unusual humming or growling noise while driving at speeds between 28 and 53 mph (45 to 85 km/h). This issue may be linked to the crossover’s 6T40 automatic transmission (RPO code MNH), which, in some cases, may have a torque converter problem. Now, GM has outlined what should be done to fix the issue.

Prior to diagnosing possible transmission issues, GM recommends that technicians first check Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #23-NA-194, which provides a fix for a similar transmission issue. TSB #23-NA-194 is referenced as the first step before proceeding with the rest of the diagnosis.

In addition to potential transmission problems, the issue may be related to the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system. This issue is present in some 2024 Chevy Trax models as a booming or drumming noise at engine speeds between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM under steady load. Notably, the noise may be coming from the speakers, even if the radio is turned off. To check if the ANC system is causing the noise, technicians are advised to manually shift the transmission to maintain an engine speed of 1,800 RPM, then listen for the noise coming from the speakers. If the noise is present, the fix involves a software update for the A11 radio system (RPO code IOR).

If the radio software update has been applied but the transmission shudder or noise persists, the next step should be to replace the torque converter. To complete this step, technicians will need to follow the Torque Converter Removal and Installation procedure provided in the appropriate GM Service Information. More information can be found in Bulletin #24-NA-242, including part numbers related to the repair.

Owners experiencing these issues should schedule a service appointment with their local Chevrolet dealer in order to diagnose and apply the appropriate fix.

As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Trax is the first model year for the crossover’s second generation, with motivation sourced from the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine. The GM VSS-F vehicle set provides the underpinnings, while production takes place at GM Changwon plant in South Korea.

  7. gm torque convertors are an issue on all models of trannys.
If you want them to last you have to reprogram the trans to not lock up till about 50 MPH.
I would do a trans service every 25k.
At the first sign of issues get the torque replaced before the whole tranny gets totalled out.
Get a second opinion if you are told you need a complete rebuild.
Some convertors are available rebuilt with a Sonax upgrade, I would invest in it if you are keeping the vehicle for the long haul.

  8. Leave the small car market to Toyota or Honda. Big Three are giving up this market. They have no clue how to build a decent small car. Just because you want a small car, that doesn’t mean you want a junk car.

  9. An incredibly putrid comment. I am usually the one to slap GM silly when they have quality/reliability issues, but why are you singling out gm’s small vehicles for your vomit? GM’s large trucks and SUVs have also been having transmission and in addition V8 engine issues too, so might as well the company just destroys itself if we follow your weak whining narrative.

  10. I bought a brand new 2025 Trax in Nov of 2024 and I feel for sure it could have transmission issues. I understand it’s smaller engine but weird jerking at certain time doesn’t make me confident that it’s not. I feel like I always smell burnt oil too.

  11. I have had my TRAX for almost a year now and I really like it. The oil indicator said I needed an oil change at 1200 miles, which surprised me. That has been my only “problem”. The 1200cc engine has performed fine. I found the TRAX to be a badly needed reply to overpriced cars being sold today. I should not have to pay more for a car than I paid for my first house.

  12. My 2024 Chevy Trax RS has over 103,000 miles since I picked it up in May of 2023 has so far only needed the other bulletin referenced in this article regarding the Active Noise Cancellation radio software update, otherwise it has been 100% trouble free! I will have my Service Advisor check into this bulletin about the torque converter but 10/10 would recommend the new Trax to friends and family, also a great car for rideshare!
