Here May Be Why Your Buick Envista Has Transmission Shudder And Noise Issues

Some 2024 Buick Envista owners are reporting unusual noises and transmission shuddering issues when driving between 28 and 53 mph (45 to 85 km/h). These issues could be the result of a malfunction in the 6T40 automatic transmission, specifically a faulty torque converter, or possibly a few other problems. Now, GM has provided guidance on diagnosing and fixing these issues.

The root of the problem may stem from a variety of different issues. GM recommends that technicians reference Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #23-NA-194 as the first course of action, as the bulletin addresses a similar transmission issue as the shuddering outlined above.

In addition to potential torque converter problems and transmission shuddering, some units of the 2024 Buick Envista may exhibit a drumming or booming noise while driving. These noises may be caused by the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system, and could occur at engine speeds between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm under steady load. The noises may be may be coming directly from the speakers, and may even be noticeable when the radio is turned off.

To determine whether the ANC system is the source of the problem, technicians are instructed to manually shift the transmission to hold the engine at 1,800 rpm while listening for any speaker-generated noise. If the ANC noise is confirmed, the technician should then apply a software update for the A11 radio system (RPO code IOR), which should eliminate the unwanted sound interference.

If the radio software update has already been applied and the transmission shudder or noise issues are still present, the next recommended step is to replace the torque converter. This procedure can be found in GM’s official tech guidelines as referenced in Bulletin #24-NA-242, which also includes the part numbers necessary for the repair.

Any Buick Envista owners experiencing these issues should schedule a service appointment with their local dealership to properly diagnose the issue and repair it.

For reference, the 2024 Buick Envista marks the debut model year for the crossover in North America. The Envista is powered by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine and rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set. Envista production takes place at GM’s Bupyeong plant in South Korea.

  1. Yet another reason to never buy the first model year of ANYTHING.

  2. Is this supposed to be new? Lucas oil “shudder stop” has been on the market for decades. Converter shudder happens on the 6 speeds, 4 speeds, occasionally the 3 speeds other than they rarely used the converter clutch so it was very unlikely to wear out, and even the old Ultramatic 2 speeds would experience converter shudder.

What’s changed is we’ve gotten less repair savey and when your transmission does something funky, we take it to a mechanic who wants to replace the whole transmission when we can spend 15$ with a shudder fix to hold us over till we can do a proper flush, and potentially a thicker ATF fluid to fix the issue.

    1. This is one reason automakers took away the transmission fill tube: so we don’t dump bottles of magic transmission fix into them!

The problems are first-year calibration teething, along with a pathetic THREE cylinder engine in a CUV. Magic oil isn’t gonna fix either of those.

  3. Steve29 our 2019 Buick Enclave with the GM 9 speed automatic transmission has shuddered in low gears since we bought it in 2021 we had our regular mechanic look at there’s nothing wrong with it and it’s still shifting the Enclave just fine. I honestly believe that GM or any other car maker is not trying to lie but they truly don’t have all of the answers. We also did the normal fluid change interval which helped!

    1. Did you do a software update and a transmission relearn? The new transmissions are constantly monitoring shift quality and will adjust shift speed for harder or softer shifts on driving conditions. I got a 2018 traverse I need to do a relearn on as it’s now got 250,000 miles on it and the calibration seems to have gotten all outta wack. I did a fluid change at 150, and 200K miles, and the fluid always came out clear and particle free.,(Fluid changes on the 9T’s are the easiest tranny I’ve ever worked on and can be done at home by a teenager) which improved the shift quality a little but the calibration seems to keep varying further out of tune. I’ll let you know how the relearn goes.

  4. The new Trax and Envista are perfect examples of getting what you paid for. They are lower priced for a reason.
