Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Sierra sales in Q4 2024 saw Big Red’s full-size pickup truck range place fourth when ranked by sales volume. Sales growth was equally distributed between the Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD.

The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) lineup continued to lead the field with a 23 percent swell to 204,111 units, followed by the Chevy Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales) with a two percent uptick to 145,692 units for second place. The Ram Pickup maintained third place with a seven percent dip to 104,454 units. The Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales) range, the Silverado’s corporate cousin and T1 platform mate, kept fourth with an 18 percent growth to 93,935 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth once again, posting a 29 percent jump to 42,005 deliveries.

The oldest EV truck here, the Ford F-150 Lightning (see running Ford F-150 Lightning sales), moved up to sixth, though it saw sales slip 10 percent to 10,703 units. The all-electric Tesla Cybertruck posted 8,300 deliveries to place seventh. The Nissan Titan moved up to eighth with a 35 percent drop to 2,477 units. The Chevy Silverado EV (see running Silverado EV sales) placed ninth with 2,176 sales. The all-electric Rivian R1T dropped 50 percent to 1,700 units, likely due to a generational changeover. The GMC Sierra EV full-size light duty pickup, the Silverado EV’s corporate cousin and BT1 platform mate, posted 1,401 deliveries as the newest entry here.

From a segment share standpoint, the Sierra earned a 15 percent share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The F-Series posted a 33 percent segment share, up three percentage points, while the Silverado had 24 percent, down two percentage points. The Ram Pickup earned a 17 percent share, down three percentage points, and the Tundra held a seven percent share, up one percentage point. The remaining contenders each held a segment share of two percent or less.

Combining GMC Sierra sales with those of the Sierra EV, and then adding Chevy Silverado and Silverado EV sales, gives GM a segment-leading 243,204 combined deliveries for a 39 percent segment share, besting Ford by more than 28K units. That keeps The General as king of full-size pickup sales in America, moving nearly two out of every five full-size trucks during the quarter.

The GM Authority Take

The GMC Sierra continued its positive trajectory during the fourth quarter of 2024, outpacing the average segment growth for the quarter as well as for the 2024 calendar year. Notably, sales of the Chevy Silverado underperformed the segment average during both timeframes. This could mean that truck buyers prefer the Sierra over the Silverado.

Even so, both GM full-size truck nameplates were in the green during Q4, and combining all of the automaker’s models, both ICE- and battery-powered solidified The General’s title as the best-seller of full-size pickup trucks in the U.S. to again outpace crosstown rival Ford. Year after year, The Blue Oval touts its F-Series as the best-selling truck line in America, but that ignores the full-size Sierra and Silverado truck ranges, which cumulatively outsell the F-Seires.

Meanwhile, battery electric trucks, such as the new GMC Sierra EV, continue to slowly make their mark. Together, they accounted for four percent of overall truck sales this time around, down from five percent the previous quarter, likely due the Rivian R1T working through a generational changeover. Furthermore, GM’s EV trucks haven’t particularly taken off yet, with the Sierra EV and Chevy Silverado EV combining for just 3,577 deliveries this period.

Big Red’s expanded truck lineup of refreshed models and off-road-focused offerings has positioned the Professional Grade brand well, especially as it offers what it claims to be the ultimate premium models in the marketplace. Full-size trucks have historically been the lifeblood of General Motors, with Chevy and GMC models combining to account for 33 percent, or one third, of all GM sales in the U.S. during 2024.

  1. Clearly GM outsells the Ford F-Series full size pickup. The numbers don’t lie. I don’t know why GM doesn’t combine GM and Chevrolet somehow and rename them the ‘GM Group’! Just have a designated nameplate on each of the Chevrolet and GMC pickups saying, ‘GM Group Affiliated’ or something/someone at GM can come up with that is making above my pay grade!😀

  2. GM continues its sales streak of outselling Ford in light-duty pickups every year from 2020 to-date. Must be why there aren’t any comments about how bad GM is, it’s failing, the management it out of touch, etc. etc.

  3. That sales streak will come to an end. It might be good now but with all of the little things happening it will fall. it is terrible, grills falling out of GMC trucks, probably because someone wanted to save a tenth of a cent in the item to hold it in. The small savings are causing bad Quality .. Mary just has to cheapen up everything and build more electric crap.
My daughter had her truck in the dealer for 3 months to get head gasket changed. It might have been both of the them ?? $11,000.bill and 3 months. Unacceptable.
I worked at GM for 38 years. Quality is getting worse.
I am looking at a Toyota now ….. Yhe big 2 and a half have went downhill.
