MotorTrend is adding a new award to the automotive award season. 2025 is the inaugural year of the MotorTrend Best Tech Awards, recognizing the best technological innovations in the automotive world. The awards are in 10 categories: Infotainment, Driver Assistance, Chassis, Powertrain, Automaker App, Aftermarket App, Home EV Charger, Public Charging Experience, Robotaxi, and General Excellence. GM’s Super Cruise hands-free system is the winner of this year’s Driver Assistance award.
“The hands-free highway assistant available in Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles is capable, confident, and responsible, making it the driver assist system we trust to take the wheel,” MotorTrend said.
It’s interesting that MotorTrend used words like “responsible” and “trust” when describing Super Cruise technology. Public confidence in autonomous vehicle technology is slowly rising but remains low. While Super Cruise isn’t a fully autonomous system, many drivers are hesitant to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods of time.
Originally exclusive to Cadillac, the Super Cruise hands-free system is now available across all four GM retail brands in the U.S. and now covers more than 750,000 miles of North American highways. It’s proliferating in GM’s luxury brand by becoming standard equipment with the 2025 model-year updates to the Cadillac CT5 and Cadillac Escalade.
Looking ahead, GM will greatly expand the availability of the semi-autonomous system across its portfolio, with 24 models expected to equip the feature by the end of 2025. Roughly 360,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles are on the road today, and that figure is expected to double in the coming year. GM says about 280 million miles have been driven with Super Cruise engaged.
The General Motors Super Cruise system is considered to be Level 2 autonomous technology, which means that it provides driver assistance rather than full automation. The system incorporates visual cameras, LiDar mapping, GPS, and radar sensors to autonomously steer and brake the vehicle while traveling on the highway, including features like full-speed range adaptive cruise control and lane centering.

Didn’t think Motor Trend was still relevant…
On the still:
It’s not. Pretty much, another Consumer Reports these days…
GM Super Cruise cannot be used for lane keep assist on city streets. Some people would like tito use it as a convenience in long extended driving on city streets (under 30 mph). I wonder why GM purposely crippled SuperCruise and LKA in such way? Was it for money saving purpose? Or to distinguish it from Ford’s BlueCruise and Ford’s Assisted lane keeping?
Congrats GM! Well deserved. Best system on the market today.
That’s why 80% of their subscribers don’t renew it. I wonder if on star has the same bad results…
I’ve said this before….If you’re too lazy to drive your own automibile, PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROAD!
Lazy has got nothing to do with it. It’s technology that’s available. If you don’t want it don’t get it. Welcome to the 21st century Bob. I have had 9 back surgeries and it’s nice to use both my arms to shift my weight around.
Full self driving is the future. People ONLY have two eyes my car has 9 cameras.
If you don’t think a computer can drive better than a human then you have a simple job that will be going away soon
With your aptly descriptive name and even worse attitude I would not want to be anywhere near you on the road. You are danger to yourself and to others.
…and keep off my front lawn when you park in front of my house!
I won’t ever us any type if feature like that. Because if you get into an accident the judge is going to ask why you’re hands weren’t in the steering wheel. You’re going to be found guilty for causing the accident, not the vehicle’s “convenience” feature.
Auto-pilot for snowflakes .
My super cruise in the Silverado EV barely functions. It will constantly disengage on the highway after I enable it. Even though I am looking at the road it will say that I am not, and shut off.
The dealership says there is no fix, but GM is aware of the bug in the software. This and the terrible Google app system cripple the enjoyment of their EVs, GM needs enable CarPlay and Android Auto on all EVs.
I just bought a 25 Buick Enclave with Super Cruise and love it! I sold my 23 Lincoln with BlueCruise 1.2 and find Super Cruise to work better in almost every way. I’ve done a lot of driving on 2-lane highways and love the fact that Super Cruise is enabled for those roads. I hope GM enables it for city streets in the future, as I would use it everywhere. The 10 hour drive that I regularly take to my daughter’s house will be much better as I traverse quite a few 2-lane highways which were not BlueCruise enabled, so I had my hands on the wheel quite a bit more in the Lincoln. The ADAS technology makes long trips much more enjoyable and relaxing. I’m sold on the tech!
I love Super Cruise – I can now text and drive at the same time!
Super Cruise works great. I got it on a 2023 Escalade. Saved my butt on a long distance drive. It is a cruse tool and not a self driving tool. If your eyes wander for a few seconds, the driver gets prompted to take control. Keep ignoring it and it will stop the vehicle. It holds the lane well, changing lanes as needed. The driver is still in control.
Love it. Use it on highways all the time.
