GM unveiled the 2025 Corvette ZR1 last July, debuting the new range-topper of the C8 Corvette lineup. With over 1,000 horsepower and a top speed over 230 mph, the new Corvette ZR1 is the fastest, most powerful production Vette ever made, and undoubtedly hugely desirable among enthusiasts. As such, some folks who purchase a new 2025 Corvette ZR1 may be tempted to resell it at hugely inflated prices, a practice also known as “flipping.” In an attempt to curb such practices, GM has put in place certain “requirements” for 2025 Corvette ZR1 ownership.
As highlighted in a recent video posted by the Rick Corvette Conti YouTube channel (featured below), new 2025 Corvette ZR1 buyers will be handed an official retention letter at delivery that outlines GM’s policy for reselling high-performance Corvette models, including the E-Ray, Z06, and ZR1. The letter stipulates that owners must hold onto their cars for a set time period after purchase, or else face certain consequences. For new E-Ray and Z06 owners, the retention period is six months, while ZR1 owner will need to hold onto their vehicle for one full year.
If the new owner decides to sell or transfer ownership before the retention period ends, GM states that they may lose the ability to order future “high-demand” models from GM (as determined by GM), and that the new owner will lose most of the factory warranty.
As the video highlights, some new owners may accidentally trigger this rule without actually selling the vehicle to a new owner, such as by transferring the car title into a business name. The scenario echoes something similar that occurred in 2023 when a Cadillac Escalade-V owner had their warranty blocked due to non-retention after refinancing their vehicle. GM eventually reinstated the Escalade-V owner’s warranty.
At the end of the day, this retention policy is nothing new, and is intended to prevent flippers from reselling high-demand vehicles for vastly overinflated prices. Nevertheless, it does not address potential dealer markups, which have been an issue with previous high-demand C8 models, despite attempts by GM to curb that practice as well.

How about some Dealer Requirements???
You know, ask over msrp and you lose your Silverado allocations.
100% this. And that’s a great penalty, losing your Silverado allocations. Love it!
why?
Don’t like the price? DON’T BUY ONE.
it’s called capitalism.
A dealer can mark it up as much as they like.
There’s a difference from capitalism and downright greediness that leads to price gouging if you could even tell such a simple difference
That’s not the point. If the dealer tacks on an exorbitant mark up it’s all good, but if you do so as an owner you get penalized
You must be confused irs not called capitalism..
It’s called shake down.
A dealship represent the Brand
and the msrp..
But then again show me 1 honest new car dealership..
There has many dealerships that have been in trouble for dishonest practice.
Manufacturer should put a end to unfair practice from there representatives ( dealerships)
If they want to be in the used car business then they should decide who they are to the consumer.
Anthony, I think you have unjustly insulted a whole nation of auto dealers of all makes. There are plenty of honest dealers out there.
1. It’s called shopping around. If you are ever able to buy a new car, I’m sure you can find one.
2. It’s called competition. This is still America. A vendor is able to sell their product at what ever the traffic will bear.
3. It’s called timing. It’s always a problem to find a hot product early in its production. That’s what the manufacturers like to call excitement.
So the dealer can sell as for as much as they like. But an individual has to meet their requirements.
In a way? This all seems kind of dumb. If someone wants to pay the asking price, then let them. To fix the problem, GM simply needs to build one more car than there is a buyer for.
You’re assuming GM wants meet demand.
I am GM. ME…THE SHAREHOLDER
A company is in business to make a PROFIT. PERIOD. Everything else is a distant fourth.
It should be you sell a car over sticker price you don’t get anymore Vette’s period. The dealership by me is asking $100K over sticker price, had asked $50k for Z06, it’s now MSRP price.
So a dealer sells at MSRP, then the buyer turns around and sells it for $60, 000 over the MSRP he paid and profits 4 Xs what the dealer did. Why is it ok for a reseller to get whatever the market will bear but not the dealer???
Neither should be allowed to do it.
why not?
Anybody who can afford one of these can afford to pay markup.
What is the point of having an MSRP if the dealer doesn’t follow the MSRP. As for the individual, non retailer seller who has no MSRP commitment and can sell for whatever they can get for the vehicle. The difference is a licensed gm dealer and an ordinary person.
The S stands for “suggested”. Are you always willing to pay MSRP, Even when there’s a lot of the model you want around and competition means you could negotiate a discount?? Market makes the price MSRP is just a suggestion.
do you know what the “S” in MSRP stands for?
People will pay what people are willing to pay.
It just blows my mind all the people whining on here, “the dealer shouldn’t be allowed to have a markup!”
During COVID when there were huge mark ups…care to guess how many cars I bought? Care to guess how many Nissan Z’s I bought with a markup? Allow me to answer: ZERO. But I 100% support the dealer charging whatever they want to.
GM does not like the practice by dealers or customers because the practice damages the reputation of the brand, and to top it off GM does not get any of the excess profit. So they do what they can to curb it. In my area c8s, including z06s are selling for about 1000 below sticker. But one dealer near me was selling z06s at sticker when they first came out. I know a guy who bought one. I know he won’t flip it. He keeps his vetted. In fact he still has his c5 z06.
It’s not ok and that what gm is trying to say. They just need to say it a little louder to the dealerships. And yes this is America but capitalism has proven not to work.
why?
It is called capitalism….it isn’t called, “Let’s do what Kurt wants and lose money!”
Seriously? $100k over sticker? Are they forgetting it’s still a Chevy?
Too much drama.
LMAO. Where can I get one?
Seems fair to me.
This woke commmnist Marxist lunatic leftist control over my god given American right to do what I want with my property. One would think Kamala is President. Not the greatest Leader of all time. MAGA
Trump has turned Tesla into a state auto dealer. Who is the communist?
Just got a vanity icense plate for my C8 Z51. “MAGA”
Retention needs to be 2 years. If you need to sell for legitimate reasons, first right of refusal to the dealer. Allocations should be by invite only to current Corvette owners (for at least the first year). If you violate the agreement you get sued for breach of contract and banned from buying any more limited or in-demand models for life. If the dealer gets caught adding ADM, they should lose all future Corvette allocations.
This 12 month voided warranty nonsense only means the cars that get flipped are either leaving the country to places where the warranty wouldn’t have mattered or getting sold to some poor sucker that’s going to enrich the bad guy and get screwed by GM creating even more bad blood.
The shenanigans gotta stop. Supply could meet demand if you got all of the self imposed middlemen out of the way. Ford figured it out, as did nearly every other high end manufacturer. If GM is gonna play in the big leagues, they need to figure out how to put a leash on their dogs and get cars to customers who legitimately want one. This whole empty threat of a voided warranty is almost as worthless as Rick Conti and Coughlin Chevrolet. Almost.
That’s laughable! GM doesn’t even have a sold order process.
GOD has nothing to do with it! Number 47 is a P.O.S.. Greatest film flam man ever.
He is God’s man in the White House. Didn’t you see that photo of Jesus with his hand on his shoulder? In 1946, God gave us Donald Trump. I am tearing up now. I have to go.
Trump. Twice elected president.
Successful Manhattan Developer.
DON.
Unacomplished, nobody commenter on an obscure automotive thread with an unhealthy obsession with someone they have never met.
Wow you think Don has issues
Look GM is limited to what they can do to dealers. They can’t set prices for dealers and even allocations can get shot down in court or bybthe Federal Trade Commission.
But if you limit the customers flipping they will not pay the inflated dealer prices. This is actually a good plan and will slow the abuse by dealer and customer.
Taking away allocations based upon destroying good will, i.e. markups, is not a discriminatory practice which the FTC could investigate.
The folks that build corvettes surely are enjoying the job security. They also probably laugh that idiots are paying for what they know isn’t worth half the price on the window sticker. When I bought the two Corvettes I owned they weren’t such a hot commodity. I was given a small discount because insurance rates on them was so high that they were afraid I would walk on the deal. My how things have changed. After all is said and done Corvettes are still just a car, not a Gilded Roman Chariot.
Just don’t pay over sticker for the car and let them sit.But we got too many people with more money than brains that have to have it…
quiet worrying about flippers and just build the dam cars !!! And why cant i use my e mail address ??
I could care less, thankfully, I would NEVER want one !
Go look at a Porsche or a high level other imported car. They are all sold over msrp. It is the market, not the Chevy dealer or Chevrolet. If you want a car pay the price. Otherwise go buy a a suburu adopt a cat and lite your pipe.
Or stick an LT crate engine in something and smoke some tail pipe. It’s all pretty boy status quo.
Anyone who can afford 1 of these definitely can afford to pay…
Doesnt matter ford tried the same thing with the gt. John Cena bought one sold it early they tried to take it to court but the case was thrown out. you know why? you buy the car you own the car. its an uninforcable cluase
Okay, no drama, no emotion. I really have no need or want for a 1,000 hp plastic car, but if they tried that nonsense on a vehicle I did buy and decided to get rid of that’s fine. I’ll just go buy from one of their competitors. Problem solved.
The easiest solution in my mind would be to only offer the car as a lease, not a buy. That way GM owns it for whatever minimum period they want, and it can’t be re-sold. Have the lease set up so that the original purchaser gets first right to purchase at a set price when the term is up, so true long-term owners will get to keep their car.
They basically did this for the EV1 and were able to get them all back despite many purchasers wanting to keep them.
Fair Trade law. Make them. Sell them. Period. The Wild West died with black and white Westerns.
My contention is, when the first Corvette ZR1 is actually sold (for whatever crazy price will be attached to it) and you start to see and hear about this amazing vehicle in road test magazines and from those “richer than god” You-Tubers blasting around in their ZR1’s, all of these meanial and trivial things discussed here will be pointless. As a long time Corvette owner (and an official “Old Dude”) I can appreciate what Chevy/GM is attempting to do, and although I don’t personally agree with having to hang onto your ZR1 for a year before being allowed to sell it (6 months is way long enough), all of this commotion we see now will magically go away and we’ll be talking about what an amazing vehicle the ZR1 really is!
One more thing, if you think all of this dribble is nonsense right now, just you wait until the new C8 Zora (or whatever it’ll be called) hits the scene…OMG, this will get even crazier as we all await the ultimate Corvette that’ll put the Mighty ZR1 “back on the used car lots” and we’ll be going through all of this crap one more time! Sheesh! The fun just never stops does it?
I like the lease idea. It still does not keep dealers from price gouging. But GM dies have leverage. They can reduce allotment to dealers who fail to comply with their policies. In fact they can revoke the franchise for unethical practices. Price gouging IS unethical.
Is this realy a sports car thread? If so can anyone answer a related question. I was told that the computer systems on any American sportscar bought by Joe blow won’t go over 129 mph. No matter what the supposed top speed is. Is that true?
I love how he’s racist strictly because of your ignorance and not by any condemning actions of his own, he’s sexist because of your ignorance and no actual prejudices that he’s displayed, and you’re accusing him of one of the most horrifying things a person can do simply because you were told that he’s terrible not because he actually is. People like you don’t deserve the rights I fought for you to keep
That’s very dishonest of Chevy. Business is business and stifling sales is bad business. Flipping is not their true focus. They think the exclusivity will boost sales. People flipping the vehicles would actually help business as they can produce and undercut flippers. Just straight dishonesty.
OK GM, lets see you slap the hands of the greedy dealers who mark up the ZR1, adding $50K plus..cut their allocations on all C8 models for starters..no balls GM ?
I seem to remember an article (unverified) of a Ferrari policy whereby modification(s) were a total No-No without written factory authorization.
Enter: Mr. Idiot Justin Bieber. He decided he wanted to paint his Farrari in his own designed paint scream. Once the factory got wind if (and photos) of his personalization they factory issued a letter to all dealers and Ferrari Certified mechanics should they perform ANY work or maintenance their dealership or certification will be permanent revoked. (chuckle). Wonder where that car is now?
mountavios I have never gone to jail been convicted of crimes including rape or cheated on my spouse you dumb P.O.S.! Talking to you would be analogous to speaking to a drunkin retarded chimp. But at least I tried.
