GM Files Energy Pass Trademark For EV Charging Mobile App

General Motors has filed to trademark the Energy Pass name, GM Authority has learned. The trademark will be used in conjunction with branding for an EV charging mobile app.

The trademark was filed on March 19th, 2025 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and is assigned serial number 99092460. The application carries a Goods and Services description of “Downloadable mobile application for use in connection with paying for electric vehicle charging services across multiple third-party networks.”

While the trademark filing certainly makes sense in light of GM’s ongoing ambitions to fully transition its light-duty fleet to all-electric powertrains by 2035, its purpose becomes less clear when considering tha EV owners can already use General Motors’ existing apps (myChevrolet, myGMC, myCadillac) to locate, use, and pay for public EV charging. As such, it’s uncertain exactly what this potential “Energy Pass” app and associated trademark might accomplish beyond what’s already in use by General Motors’ EV customers.

One of the biggest hurdles to widespread EV adoption most commonly cited by U.S. consumers is a lack of charging infrastructure. To that end, General Motors has partnered with several companies to help build out the broader charging network, including EVgo, which installed its 2,000th DC fast charging stall in the U.S. last December, and Ionna, which plans to open more than 1,000 charging bays by the end of 2025.

GM has also partnered with Tesla to provide General Motors EV customers with access to the Tesla Supercharger network. In order to connect to a Tesla Supercharger, General Motors customers must use an adapter to convert their CCS (Combined Charging System) style plug to the Tesla-style NACS (North American Charging Standard) plug.

Despite urging from the auto industry, the Trump administration has made it clear that it will end funding for EV adoption and expansion, including federal investment into the broader national EV charging infrastructure.
