GM Appoints Barak Turovsky As New Chief AI Officer

GM has appointed longtime Silicon Valley veteran Barak Turovsky as the company’s first-ever Chief AI Officer. It appears that the Chief AI Officer will report to David Richardson, Senior Vice President of Software and Services Engineering. Richardson began his career with GM in 2023 and was previously with Apple for 11 years.

“I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve joined General Motors as Chief AI Officer,” Turovsky said in a LinkedIn post. “It’s an incredible time to be part of GM’s transformative journey, and I’m eager to contribute to the company’s innovation in applying AI to automotive technology.”

Turovsky’s impressive resume dating back to the 1990s includes roles at IBM, SAP Labs, PayPal, Microsoft, and Google. His role before joining GM was VP of AI at Cisco Systems since 2023.

“On a personal note, I recently visited the Smithsonian with my family and was truly inspired by the legacy of Chevrolet and Cadillac and its enormous contribution to modern American and global history,” Turovsky continued. “GM has a remarkable culture of builders, and it’s an honor to contribute to the next chapter of such an iconic company.”

So, what exactly does the Chief AI Officer at a car company do? “AI is central to GM’s future, driving everything from our path to autonomy to advancements in manufacturing and dealer processes,” David Richardson said in a LinkedIn post congratulating Turovsky in his new role. “Barak brings deep expertise in developing AI solutions that enhance products, optimize operations, and improve customer experiences.”

“Path to autonomy” is likely a reference to GM’s constantly expanding Super Cruise hands-free driving system, which General Motors now says covers over 700,000 miles of North American highways. Advancements in manufacturing an dealer processes are a little more vague. Being a brand-new position, the duties of the role will likely be more firmly established as the Chief AI Officer gains experience in the role.
