Chevy Silverado 1500 Was A Car Thief Sweetheart In 2024

The Chevy Silverado 1500 was one of the most stolen vehicles in the U.S. last year, according to newly released data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Despite a significant drop in overall vehicle thefts, the Silverado remained a prime target for car thieves, ranking third among the most stolen vehicles in the nation. The Silverado was also the only pickup among the top five most stolen vehicles, with the remaining four entries in the list being sedans.

According to NICB data, 2024 marked a major turnaround for vehicle theft in the U.S., with the total number of vehicles stolen nationwide dropping to 850,708 units last year, down 17 percent from the 1,020,729 vehicles stolen in 2023. The year-to-year decrease follows four consecutive years of auto theft increases. In addition, 2024 also marked the first time in which the total number of stolen vehicles fell below the one-million mark since 2021, as well as the largest single-year decline in four decades. Now, NICB reports that auto theft rates have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

NICB credits this dramatic decline to a coordinated effort between law enforcement, vehicle manufacturers, and government agencies, with data-driven policing, targeted theft investigations, and anti-theft technology all playing a role. NICB states that it also assisted in recovering hundreds of thousands of stolen vehicles and helped law enforcement to break up major theft rings.

Some states saw particularly steep declines in auto theft rates, with Washington down 32 percent, Nevada down 31 percent, Oregon down 30 percent, Nebraska down 29 percent, and Colorado down 26 percent. Maine was the only state that saw an increase in vehicle thefts, recording a two-percent rise in 2024. Washington, D.C. reported the highest vehicle theft rate in the country, with 842.4 thefts per 100,000 residents, over three times the national average, despite a notable 18-percent decline year-to-year.

Looking at the list of the most stolen vehicles in 2024, the Chevy Silverado 1500 ranked third with over 21,000 thefts reported. The rest of the list included sedan models, with two Hyundais taking the top spots:

  • Hyundai Elantra – 31,712 thefts
  • Hyundai Sonata – 26,720 thefts
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – 21,666 thefts
  • Honda Accord – 18,539 thefts
  • Kia Optima – 17,493 thefts

  1. get yourself a OBD data port lock for under your dash, problem solved. Most of the crooks attach to this after breaking in and fool the vehicle into starting. If they can’t access the port easily because there is a locked cover over it, they are not going to stick around long.

  2. I would be embarrassed to be before a judge and probation officer. YOU STOLE A WHAT? A POS Elantra? Now, if one were to boost a Caddy……. that’s understandable.
