Chevy Camaro Recalled For Momentary Wheel Lock-Up Issue

The 2020 Chevy Camaro, the 2021 Chevy Camaro and the 2022 Chevy Camaro are all included in a recent GM Safety Recall for momentary, dangerous wheel lock-up that can occur because of a transmission control valve defect with a fast-wearing valve.

Several other models from Chevy and Cadillac are included in Safety Recall number N242480630, while the fix that is available is only offered on certain models and configurations, with a phased introduction of the fix to the remaining models in the future.

The problem: in affected Chevy Camaro units, the optional GM Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission may have been built with a defective transmission control valve (apparently a materials defect). Excess wear occurs at an accelerated rate on these transmission control valves, cutting back over time on how much pressure it contains. Camaro factory software can’t detect the accelerated wear.

The hazards: gradual loss of pressure because of an excessively worn transmission control valve has several negative effects over time. Eventually, the pressure loss will result in harsh, unpleasant shifts. Further wear may cause the valve to malfunction when downshifting from eighth to seventh gear, causing the Chevy Camaro wheels to lock up briefly during driving.

Sudden lock-up of the wheels while the Camaro is in motion, particularly at highway speeds, can result in an accident or a crash.

The fix: currently, there is no fix available for affected Chevy Camaro units. When the remedy becomes available in the future, dealership service technicians will install new software – that is able to detect and respond to excess transmission control valve wear – on the Transmission Control Module.

This software will be able to measure excess wear of the transmission control valve. It will respond when approximately 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) of driving prior to wheel lock-up remains. The software will block the Camaro from shifting above fifth gear, limiting its top speed, mobility, and power. With the lock-up happening between seventh and eighth gear this will prevent the hazardous condition. “Reduced Propulsion” and “Check Engine” will be displayed on the instrument panel to warn of the condition.

The transmission control valve, or possibly portions of the transmission or the entire transmission, will need to be replaced at that point to correct the issue. However, GM does not mention this in the recall document and refers to the remedy as requiring no parts.

As a reminder, this recall will affect only Chevy Camaro units that are equipped with the optional 10-speed automatic transmission. For the affected model years, this transmission could be matched to the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, the naturally aspirate 6.2L V8 LT1 gasoline engine or the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine. Units equipped with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine are not affected by this recall as this powerplant was matched with the optional GM 8-speed automatic transmission.

Affected vehicles: 

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 50,147 Camaro units are affected by the recall. In addition, 2,235 CT4 units, 27,097 CT5 units and 10,602 CT6 units are involved, for a combined 90,081 vehicles impacted by this recall. There are also 3,413 units across all four nameplates affected by the recall in Canada.

GM has also issued a Stop Delivery order for affected Camaros as of March 6th, 2025, making delivery of affected cars from dealership inventory a violation of federal law. Once the fix is available and has been applied to any affected Camaro units the Stop Delivery order is removed from those cars and they can be delivered, demonstrated or traded again.

Owners should: wait for General Motors to develop the necessary software fix and send out notification letters to owners of record.   1. Always buy the manual transmission. The technology is tried and tested, and so simple that you can’t screw it up – Tremec knows what they are doing. Not to mention, you get a greater degree of control over your car and more pleasure driving it!

  3. It seems that GM has had problems with their transmissions lately. Looks like they need better quality controls for every part that goes in their cars & trucks.

    1. GM’s transmission issues go back at least 10 years, with the 8-speed automatic I’ve had in two Corvettes and one Camaro. Those cars had horrible shift quality, which felt like the car was crossing highway “rumble” strips when upshifting. It’s very sad that the car company that once made the finest automatic transmissions in the world (even used by premium car builders globally) cannot seem to engineer or build a decent one today. For this reason, my last purchase was a Mercedes-Benz E-class which is a joy to drive. After being a life-long GM customer, I won’t buy another one.

  5. I honestly think that part of GM’s transmission issues is because they are jointly built with Ford they need to go back to building their own stuff again like they used to in the 80s and 90s, I mean they had issues back then to but not this bad
