The GM Authority Take

Chevy Express sales were solid during Q4 2024 and up for the 2024 calendar year, but not enough to move up from third place. Even combining sales of the Express and the GMC Savana couldn’t budge GM from third overall, staying behind Ram in second place and far behind the best-selling Ford Transit, and definitely when combined with the Ford E-Series.

As GM Authority continues to note, the Express/Savana is an old vehicle that dates back to the 1990s. The duo remains the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin and are even the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Meanwhile, competitors field substantially more modern and attractive products. Even so, GM has sold more than three million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

GM previously considered to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However, the automaker seems to have canceled any next-generation vans, instead moving the all-electric BrightDrop vans under the Chevy brand while planning to continue offering the Express in its current form.

We explain why the Chevy Express and GMC Savana have never changed and probably never will, but do make the case for some updates that could enable GM to get more mileage out of these money makers for yet another decade.

  1. Ford Transit/ram pro Master are not in the same class. Only Ford E series is in this class (old school, BOF, shoebox van) GM almost has a monopoly on this segment, hence they haven’t changed anything. The transit/pro Master compete with the Mercedes Sprinter and are wholey unsuited for the job site the express run on. GM has no competitor for the transit.

  2. Chevy express still beats them all. For reliability and a general all round work van nothing compares. The problem is it needs to be put back to where it was instead of allowing woke environmental bad judgement destroy a vehicle that workmen used to virtually build and repair America. Ford and Ram and Mercedes cannot make that claim. They forget we are still flying the B52. A machine built in 1952 manned by pilots that are three generations into the future. LEAVE WHAT WORKS ALONE!

  3. They can’t sell and we can’t buy what they don’t build enough of!
Oh and after all these years they can’t get White Paint to stick? I see so many with blotches of grey primer showing. Had my own 89 Astro do that years ago under warranty.

    1. RICK: You are right. My 23 express had a spot appear on the driver side. A very talented sign man patched it unnoticeable.

  4. I’m on my 3rd express. I like the ride, durability, towing and hauling capacity plus the simple but powerful pushrod engine options. I would not change the basic platform but would like:
    A higher top version
A hybrid version using the V6 with electric boost
A large inverter option to run saws and other larger power tools
    Standard remote keyless entry
    Standard electric mirrors
The dash could use an update but is functional as is, just looks antiquated.
The same body style helps resale and finally, fix the white paint problem. I mean from my white 1999 diesel, they still after 26 years can’t keep the paint on. Maybe a single stage non clear coat urethane is an answer.
