Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Equinox sales during Q4 2024 enabled GM’s best-selling crossover to jump several spots from the previous quarter to place third among 15 entries in the mainstream C-segment crossover segment.

The Toyota RAV4 continued to lead the space, posting a five percent dip in sales year-over-year to 124,862 units, followed again by the Honda CR-V in second place with a six percent bump to 104,627 units. The Equinox (see running Chevy Equinox sales), the first of two entries in this segment from GM, placed third with a 10 percent upswing to 64,207 units; though an improvement compared to the prior quarter, that’s still about half the deliveries of the RAV4 and 40K units lower than the CR-V. In fact, the Toyota and Honda were once again the only two to break 100K deliveries.

The Nissan Rogue maintained fourth place with a six percent downturn to 56,568 units. The Subaru Forester moved up a spot to fifth with a two percent drop to 45,423 units. The Kia Sportage and its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Tucson, followed in sixth and seventh, respectively, with the Sportage up 30 percent to 43,159 units and the Tucson up eight percent to 40,007 deliveries. The Ford Escape (see running Ford Escape sales), one of two segment entries from The Blue Oval, kept the eighth spot with a three percent dip to 36,383 units. The VW Tiguan moved up two spots to ninth place with a 48 percent jump to 30,477 units. The Ford Bronco Sport (see running Ford Bronco Sport sales) took tenth with a two percent decrease to 30,344 units. Meanwhile, the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), the Equinox’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate, kept 12th place with a two percent slip to 16,813 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take

After slipping the previous quarter, the Chevy Equinox returned to its historic position as the third best-selling nameplate in the segment after slipping during the prior quarter due to a generational changeover. Sufficient inventory and strong interest resulted in a healthy uptick that outpaced the segment average. Even so, this was not anywhere close to enough to close the gap with the RAV4 and CR-V in any meaningful way.

That was also the case when combining sales of the Equinox and GMC Terrain, which – at 81K units – was healthy, but still far unseating Toyota and Honda. In fact, even the two models from Hyundai and Kia outsold The General’s two entires, with crosstown rival Ford following closely after GM.

Notably, the Terrain has not yet been impacted by the generational changeover, as its launch is trailing that of the Equinox by several months.

Nevertheless, the next-generation 2025 Chevy Equinox and all-new 2025 GMC Terrain give The General its best chance yet in the huge (and still growing) mainstream C-crossover segment.

About Chevrolet Equinox

The all-new 2025 Chevy Equinox debuts as the fourth generation of GM’s  best-selling utility. Highlights of the compact crossover include larger screens in the cabin, many new safety features, and the new-for-2025 Activ trim level, offering a more rugged setup for outdoorsy activities. The 2025 Chevy Equinox is wider and taller than the 2024 model, with a slightly more spacious interior. It also offers rear a camera mirror and washer. Here is an exterior visual comparison of the 2025 Equinox LT vs. 2024 Equinox LT.

The new Equinox is equipped with various new tech features and benefits from the GM Global B electronic architecture. Furthermore, the updated crossover gets traffic sign recognition and offers heated wiper park.

Here are all the interior colors, plus a visual comparison of the LT vs. the LT Midnight Edition.

However, the next-generation model offers the same turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine as before, placing its powertrain mid-pack among competitors. Consequently, the 2025 Equinox fuel economy ratings show it to be slightly less efficient compared to the preceding generation.

The 2025 Equinox can tow up to 1,500 pounds, with towing accessories incoming.

  1. Can we get a recount? That can’t be right, the vehicle with a single dog of a 1.5 motor is third in sales? If it had the 2.0 it would outsell the CRV and Rav4 two to one.

    1. Many of those sales were leftover ’24s, I’m sure.

    2. I don’t know man. Those CR-V old ladies LOVE those crappy little things. You’ll pry them from their cold dead hands and many of them will tell you that.

    3. IF it had the 2.0 L it would be $5K pricier and sell even less. It’s not in 3rd normally. It and the Escape are bottom-dwellers.

      1. Beachy29579…I’ve owned the 2.0T equinox and my current 1.5T. While the 1.5 is not as fast as the 2.0t I do enjoy better gas mileage I changed the stock junk paper air filter with a k&n flat panel engine air filter that’s made for my air filter box, I use Royal purple 0W20 full synthetic motor oil, and I put super unleaded gas in the my 1.5T and I usually run from 28 to 30MPG easy and I have no problem merging onto highways. Don’t believe everything you hear or read instead of a bigger engine this new Equinox should have a hybrid option.

  2. I’ll bet a lot of those sales were leftover ’24s. I could see the new one getting resistance in the marketplace. I can’t stand it overall but yes, it does look better. Not enough. Downgraded motor, CVT, lousy fuel economy and some bizarre interior screwups, like the HUGE drive mode controller forcing the gear selector to the column, forcing the wiper stalk to the left…and so on. It’s much pricier, feature for feature (though there ARE a lot more safety nannies), much less discounted and don’t get me started on the width. And then the outrageous OnStar/Google Built-In monthly fees, like $70, and I’d go running to the Hyundai dealership in a heartbeat.

    1. General consumers don’t care about a 1.5T and lacking power. They want an affordable, efficient suv that gets them to A to B.

Have you saw most drivers with on ramps? They’re not timing their 0-60 getting onto the highway or darting in and out of traffic.

There are other class leading SUV’s in this segment when it comes to performance figures, yet they’re further down the list.

    2. First of all this new Equinox is a 2025 model it wasn’t out yet in 2024, the styling inside and out is much better then the old plain Jane equinox even if you ordered the 2.0t engine you got dual exhaust but basically the same interior, I like the new gear selector it frees up space in the center console that’s taken up up by an outdated design, it’s not that much wider I’ve seen a new one in person, the CVT is for front wheel drive only models which living in the north east I need AWD with the 8 speed automatic, and finally you don’t pay for Google with the ICE models it’s free and who the hell uses OnStar anymore? I’ve had in all my GM vehicle’s and never used it.

  3. I have a 2024 RAV 4 Hybrid as my company car. I don’t have any idea why it is so popular. Other than fuel economy, there is absolutely nothing that isn’t bland, ordinary or downright uncompetitive about it. Ugly front end, dated interior that looks 10 years old, automatic high beams that don’t work, heated steering wheel that only heats the sides of the wheel, not the top or bottom, no floor mats included with any trim. Other than fuel economy, our 2021 Equinox is better in every way vs. the 2024 RAV 4.

  4. I agree the HONDA TOYOTA paid group from consumer reports is one of the longest running scams in history. The CRV and RAV4 are heavily paid off by consumer reports. The people I know who have Equinox cars absolutely love them over the CRV and Rav4.

The sad truth of the matter is that MANY Boomers and GenXers , who have Boomer parents, remember the 70s and 80s when folks flocked to the Japanese brands due to shoddy quality from Detroit and have never returned. Some defected to the South Koreans. The former won’t go near a showroom other than Toyota or Honda.

Consumer reports also never mentioned the RAV4 transmission problems from years ago my friend has a V6 model and it needed a transmission before 100,000 miles. As the current owner of a 2019 1.5t Lt equinox I love it and when the time comes I’ll check this new out.

  5. GM could significantly cut into the sales leaders by offering an Equinox/Terrain hybrid model that produces 200+ horsepower and offers better fuel economy numbers. The vehicle looks great and will sell well in the first two years. However, if they allow it to become stale and not offer an upgraded powertrain, sales will likely start to fall by year 3. The competition is stiff, respond or fall behind.

    2. MNSteve GM was supposed to offer a hybrid equinox but I’ve heard nothing about it. They should also drop the slow selling ICE Blazer that GM thinks deserves the better engine options there is really no need for the Blazer anymore the interior space is not much bigger then the equinox and much smaller then the Traverse. Take that Blazer 2.0t and put it in the equinox.
