Cadillac has officially secured approval to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2026, marking a significant milestone in General Motors’ motorsport ambitions. Backed by TWG Motorsports and GM, the Cadillac F1 Team will become the 11th team on the grid. GM announced the launch of the Cadillac F1 program last November.
The announcement follows more than a year of scrutiny and controversy, but now, both the FIA and Formula One Management have officially confirmed that Caddy meets the necessary requirements to compete in the championship.
“Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “The FIA Formula One Championship’s expansion to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM/Cadillac brings fresh energy, aligning with the new FIA 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport.”
GM emphasizes that its F1 entry is a distinctly American effort, leveraging TWG Motorsports’ experience across multiple racing series, including IndyCar, Formula E, IMSA, and NASCAR. The group also has existing partnerships with Spire Motorsports, Andretti Global, and Wayne Taylor Racing.
“We’re thrilled the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is official, as the team has been accelerating its work,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership for us and for our collaboration with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1.”
The new F1 team will be led by Graeme Lowdon as Team Principal, while Russ O’Blenes will oversee TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC as CEO. Though the team will initially race using a Ferrari customer power unit in 2026, the long-term plan is to become a full works team by 2030, developing its own chassis and power units.
Currently, TWG Motorsports operates with a team of over 300 engineers, working on aero, chassis, and component development, alongside software and vehicle dynamics simulation. The team has facilities in Indianapolis, Charlotte, Warren, and Silverstone.
