Cadillac CTS And ATS Recalled For Power Steering Loss

Two discontinued Cadillac luxury car models, the compact Cadillac ATS and the midsize Cadillac CTS, are included in a new safety recall issued by The General and related to a power steering assist problem caused by a defective circuit board installed during manufacture.

Models and model years included in GM Safety Recall number N252497020 include the 2017 Cadillac ATS, the 2018 Cadillac ATS, the 2016 Cadillac CTS, the 2017 Cadillac CTS and the 2018 Cadillac CTS.

The problem: the supplier of the steering gear assembly supplied a specific run of components for affected Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS cars, containing a defective printed circuit board that can induce malfunctions in the power steering of the vehicles.

The hazards: the defective steering gear assembly circuit board of the Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS vehicles involved in the recall can lose electrical connectivity and power steering failure due to an open circuit. The power steering may be able to be “reset” by shutting the car off and restarting it, but the problem can return at any time until fixed.

The ATS or CTS unit switches over abruptly to manual steering when the circuit board glitches and power steering shuts off. Manual steering needs more physical input to achieve the same results. Accidents or crashes could theoretically result from the sudden change to much less responsive steering while driving, though no known accidents have occurred. Manual steering is most physically difficult at low speeds.

The fix: affected Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS vehicles should have their steering gear assembly swapped out for a new component by authorized GM dealer service technicians. The new part contains a correctly functioning circuit board that will not cause the problem with power steering to recur.

The remedy is available free of charge. If the repair was already carried out at some point at the owner’s expense they are likely eligible for reimbursement of the costs.

Affected components: steering gear assembly.

Number of affected vehicles: General Motors manufacturing records indicate 94 Cadillac ATS and 104 Cadillac CTS units are affected by this safety recall. There are also 536 Chevy Camaro units and 200 Chevy Corvette units involved. Across the four nameplates, 38 cars are recalled in Canada as well.

Owners should: await notification letters from GM to come by standard mail with detailed instructions on how to obtain the repair. March 20th, 2025 marked the start of dealership notification, while May 5th, 2025 has been set as the date to mail notification letters to ATS and CTS owners.

  1. I had the exact same problem on my 2018 CTS @ 26k miles 1 year ago. Unfortunately dealer/repair said my vin wasn’t recalled and I was stuck with a $3k bill and 3 weeks to find a complete rack and pinion. Adding misery, another $1k for a touch screen that’s been waiting for a class action remedy.
4x GM since 1986. Waiting for tariff war to end.
