Cadillac CT6 Recalled For Momentary Wheel Lock-Up Issue

A General Motors Safety Recall – related to momentary wheel lock-up with a risk of a resulting crash that is caused by a transmission valve defect – includes the 2019 Cadillac CT6 and 2020 Cadillac CT6 sedans, the final model years of the nameplate offered in North America.

The affected Cadillac CT6 units join other Cadillac and Chevy nameplates from the same approximate period as part of Safety Recall number N242480630, with a remedy only available for certain models.

The problem: affected units of the Cadillac CT6 were produced with a GM Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission containing a defective transmission control valve. This transmission control valve wears out much faster than expected, reducing the pressure it can contain. Factory software in the CT6 can’t measure this accelerated wear.

The hazards: the first symptom caused by excessively rapid wear of the transmission control valve is harsh shifting. As wear accumulates further and the pressure the valve can contain drops more, the valve may finally fail to the point the wheels of the involved Cadillac CT6 lock up briefly, which occurs while the vehicle is driving. This, in turn, can cause the driver to lose control or other unforeseen events to happen than can result in a collision between vehicles or the CT6 crashing off the road.

The fix: GM has a remedy for certain vehicles affected by this recall. This includes some Cadillac CT6 units, but not others. The fix is available for the 2019 Cadillac CT6 equipped with the turbocharged 2.0L LSY I4 gasoline engine only at this time. Vehicles motivated by the naturally aspirated 3.6L LGX V6 gasoline engine and the twin-turbocharged 4.2L TT LTA V8 gasoline engine are included in the recall, but currently have no fix available.

The remedy is carried out by reprogramming of the Transmission Control Module with new software that is able to measure and respond to the accelerated wear of the defective transmission control valve.

Approximately 10,000 miles or 16,000 kilometers before wheel lock-up becomes possible as a result of wear, the new software in the Transmission Control Module will detect the wear and take several actions. With the lock-up occurring during a downshift to seventh gear to eighth gear, the software limits the CT6 to fifth gear at the highest. A “Check Engine” light and “Reduced Propulsion” indicator appear on the instrument panel.

This fix requires no physical components. However, once the CT6 is locked from shifting above fifth gear and fast driving is no longer possible, it is clear the worn transmission control valve and possibly part or all of the transmission will require replacement to return normal function. GM does not mention this in its Safety Recall.

Affected components: transmission control valve.

Notably, all trims and variants of the Cadillac CT6 equip the affected 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. This includes the high-performance Cadillac CT6-V. Therefore, all CT6 sedans from the 2019 and 2020 model years may potentially be affected.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 10,602 CT6 units are affected by the recall. In addition, 2,235 CT4 units, 27,097 CT5 units and 50,147 Camaro units are involved, for a combined 90,081 vehicles impacted by the recall. There are also 3,413 units across all four nameplates affected by the recall in Canada.

Additionally, vehicles included in the safety recall are under a Stop Delivery order as of March 6th, 2025. Selling or delivering affected CT6 sedans in dealership inventory is a violation of federal law. Applying the remedy, if available, removes the Stop Delivery order and the sedans can once more be traded, demonstrated and/or delivered.
