A very limited number of BrightDrop Zevo commercial EV vans are included in a new Safety Recall issued by GM related to a steering shaft issue that can cause steering lock-up, increasing the risk of an accident or crash.
General Motors Safety Recall number N252495400 includes the 2024 BrightDrop Zevo 400, the 2023 BrightDrop Zevo 600, and the 2024 BrightDrop Zevo 600 models.
The problem:Â affected BrightDrop Zevo units have a condition in which the so-called “knub,” a steering shaft alignment feature, gets forced out of position and damaged during production, and is shoved down to the base of the steering shaft. In this position, the knub can become forced into the steering knuckle.
The hazards:Â if the steering shaft knub is becomes jammed in the steering knuckle, the knuckle will become non-functional and the steering of the Zevo 400 or Zevo 600 will lock up and remain locked up. Lock-up of the steering while the BrightDrop van is driving could cause an accident or lead to the vehicle crashing.
The fix:Â GM offers a fix for the BrightDrop Zevo vans involved in this safety recall. Dealership repair technicians are instructed to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft with a new component that is undamaged and has the “knub” alignment feature in the correct location.
The remedy is available free of charge to current owners. None of the affected vehicles are still in dealer inventory, so there is no reason for dealers to apply the fix to current stock, nor is there any stop-sale order or similar. Those who have already received repairs may be eligible for reimbursement.
Note that incorrect repairs may have been carried out prior to the recall and these will need to be redone.
Affected components: lower intermediate steering shaft.
