General Motors has just officially announced the all-new 2025 Buick GL8 LS in China. The upcoming new energy GL8 variant was first leaked in June 2024.
The automaker announced it will soon introduce the all-new 2025 Buick GL8 LS to the domestic market in China, continuing the renewal of Buick’s successful, China-exclusive full-size MPV family. The new version carries the LS prefix for “Lu Shang” alongside the GL8 nameplate and is equipped with a new energy powertrain system, including at least one plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system.
“Buick today announced its latest new energy MPV for China. The Buick GL8 Lu Shang (LS) will redefine the new energy premium MPV segment at the RMB 300,000 (about $41,500 USD) price point,” said GM China Communications Department. “The newest member of the GL8 family will be available in the first half of this year,” the company added.
With the first official low-lit preview images of the model, GM China describes the all-new 2025 Buick GL8 LS as “a seven-seat MPV that embodies Buick’s 26 years of expertise developing premium MPVs” that will join the GL8 family of models below the fully redesigned models and the range-topping GL8 Century. The company says the term “Lu” reflects Buick’s deep roots in China and “Shang” reflects the brand’s excellence.
While last year’s leak suggested it would include a hybrid powertrain, the announcement of the 2025 Buick GL8 LS reveals the upcoming minivan will feature an advanced plug-in hybrid system that Buick claims will offer the longest overall range, the highest output, the fastest acceleration, and the lowest real-world energy consumption in its class. It will also include an all-new long-life, energy-efficient battery.
The all-new 2025 Buick GL8 LS will be officially unveiled in China in the coming weeks, with availability at authorized Buick dealerships and planned for the spring. This new mid-level variant seeks to reinforce the GL8 family’s success as a pioneer in the premium MPV market and will give it its broadest range ever, comprised of the base GL8, GL8 LS, GL8 ES, and GL8 Century.

While there are some really good Chinese Buicks I’d love to see built and sold in the US… they can keep this minivan. (Though that PHEV drivetrain might be interesting if brought stateside.)
The U-van lives!
Can’t understand why GM is not selling the fully electric Buick Electra E4 and E5 models over here
This new model could be a game changer if brought stateside for two reasons: A lot of folks do not want to jump all the way to EV (see the success those offering PHEV’s are having), and we STILL don’t have a GM minivan of ANY brand. I just completed a household move and it was AMAZING how much cargo I was able to carry in a Chrysler minivan, once all of the seats were folded compactly into the floor. (Chrysler did an excellent job of addressing a key requirement: once the seats were folded into the floor, I could have carried full sheets of plywood (flat) if I wanted to.) I only had to rent a full-size cargo van once (for the things that were physically too large for the minivan); otherwise the minivan sufficed. Of course, that likely would not be the case with a PHEV minivan, as the “basement” of the vehicle might be filled with batteries and have no room for the seats to disappear into the floor. (That’s a REAL problem with the new VW ID.Buzz (the reimagined “bus”), as it has VERY little cargo capacity with its seats only folding over (no “height”) since its battery packs are under the floor.)
Very Sharp, would be a great edition to sell at Buick dealers with their limited amount of vehicles offered now.
