GMC’s 2025 Sierra 1500 receives a variety of small changes for the seventh model year of the full-size, half-ton truck’s fourth generation.
Model Cadence
The 2025 Sierra 1500 follows the 2019 Sierra 1500, which received a complete overhaul (re-engineering and redesign) to launch the fourth-gen model, whereas the 2022 Sierra 1500 (technically 2022.5) brought about a mid-cycle refresh, followed by small changes to the 2023 Sierra 1500 and the 2024 Sierra 1500.
Model Line
No changes are made to the model line, as the 2025 Sierra 1500 continues to be offered in three body cab configurations, three bed lengths, and eight trim levels, as follows:

Exterior
The exterior sees a handful of changes, starting with the deletion of the Dynamic Blue Metallic (GLT) and Deep Bronze Metallic (GXN) color options.

Additionally, the AT4 trim gets a new standard wheel and tire setup. While 2024 models shipped with 18-inch machined aluminum wheels with dark painted pockets (57N) wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory Mud Terrain (MT) tires as standard, this combination becomes optional for the 2025 model year. The standard rollers become the 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with Carbon Grey Metallic accents (NZH) wrapped with Bridgestone Dueler All-Terrain blackwall tires, which were optional for the 2024 model year. This change also impacts the spare tire: 255/80R17SLÂ all-season is now the standard spare, while the 265/70R17SL all-season is optional.
Also, a new set of 22-inch Bright split-spoke wheels (LPO SFU) joins the options list for SLT and Denali.
From there, the “standard” tailgate (QK1) becomes standard on SLE and Elevation trims. For the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500, the standard tailgate (QK1) was available as an option on these trims since MultiPro Tailgate (QK2) was standard. The MultiPro Tailgate (QK2) becomes optional on 2025 model year SLE and Elevation.

Rounding out the changes to the exterior is the addition of the GMC logo for AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate models. The 2024 models featured a trim-specific logo (as follows):
- AT4 logo on AT4 trim
- AT4X logo on AT4X trim
- Denali logo on Denali and Denali Ultimate trims
Interior
No changes are made to the interior, with the 2025 Sierra 1500 cabin continuing to offer the same two screen options across three dash configurations.
The Pro trim gets the base 7-inch center stack screen with the pre-refresh cockpit layout, while the remaining trims get the much more modern 13.4-inch display with the new cockpit design. Of these, SLE, Elevation and SLT trims get the “regular” center stack configuration, while the AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate get a more premium setup.
Mechanical
GMC made no changes to the mechanical bits of the 2025 Sierra 1500, with the exception of some minor availability changes. This means that the same four engine options carry over from the 2023 and 2024 model years.
Engine | Fuel | Aspiration | Transmission | Horsepower @ RPM | Torque @ RPM | Axle Ratio |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2.7L L3B Turbo Max I4 | Gasoline | Turbocharged | 8-Speed Automatic (MFC) | 310 @ 5600 | 430 @ 1500 | 3.42 |
5.3L L84 EcoTec3 V8 | Gasoline | Atmospheric | 10-Speed Automatic (MHT) | 355 @ 5600 | 383 @ 4100 | 3.42 |
5.3L L84 EcoTec3 V8 | Gasoline | Atmospheric | 10-Speed Automatic (MHS) | 355 @ 5600 | 383 @ 4100 | 3.42 |
6.2L L87 EcoTec3 V8 | Gasoline | Atmospheric | 10-Speed Automatic (MHS) | 420 @ 5600 | 460 @ 4100 | 3.23 |
3.0L LZ0 Duramax I6 | Diesel | Turbocharged | 10-Speed Automatic (MQB) | 305 @ 3750 | 495 @ 2750 | 3.23 |
3.0L LZ0 Duramax I6 | Diesel | Turbocharged | 10-Speed Automatic (MQC) | 305 @ 3750 | 495 @ 2750 | 3.23 |
The 10-speed automatic transmission (MI2) now requires 4WD on the Crew Cab model in conjunction with the Pro trim. For the 2024 model year, this transmission option was available with either 2WD or 4WD. No matter the model year, the MI2 transmission is included and only available with Police Pursuit Package (9C1), Special Services Package (5W4) or E85 FlexFuel capability (FHS).
Additionally, the 10-speed automatic transmission (MQB) on Elevation and SLT trims with the bench seat requires 4WD. For the 2024 model year, this transmission was available with either 2WD or 4WD. For either the 2024 or 2025 model years, the MQB transmission is one of two transmissions used in conjunction with the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine; the other transmission used in conjunction with the LZ0 is the 10-speed automatic (MQC), which has Electronic Transmission Range Selector (ETRS) and paddle shifters, features that the MQB transmission lacks.
Similarly, E85 FlexFuel capability (FHS) now requires 4WD on Crew Cabs in the Pro trim. The 2024 model year, by comparison, offered E85 FlexFuel capability in either 4WD or 2WD. Regardless, FHS is only available for Fleet or Government sales orders, 4WD Crew Cab models, 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 L84 engine, and requires the Trailer brake controller (JL1). Notable, selecting FHS deletes automatic engine stop/start.
Rounding out the changes on the mechanical end is the addition of the Universal Vehicle Module (KGU). Available only on the Pro trim, it enables CAN readability of selected messages utilizing SAE J1939 formatting, offering 10-switchable inputs and outputs. It includes a graphical user interface to customize specific needs with more than 150 operating parameters available to read.
Driver Assist Technology
The 2025 Sierra 1500 makes a few availability-level changes to driver assist technology.
First, Super Cruise (UKL) becomes standard on Denali Ultimate. It was optional on the 2024 model year Denali Ultimate for the 2024 model year. For the 2025 model year, it remains an option on the regular (non-Ultimate) Sierra Denali. Additionally, cruise control (K34) becomes standard on the Pro trim, after being optional for the prior model year.
Finally, the trailer brake controller (JL1) becomes standard on SLE, Elevation and SLT trims. It was optional for 2024 models.
And that rounds out all the changes to the 2025 Sierra 1500.
The updates and changes described here are specific to the U.S. market and may be different for other markets.
Looking Ahead
The current-generation Sierra 1500 will be available for the 2025 and 2026 model years, after which point the all-new, next-gen model will arrive for the 2027 model year.

Should make the turbo max with a 10 speed.
I asked GM engineers why the L3B / TurboMax doesn’t get the 10-speed and was told that it simply doesn’t need the 10 due to the higher torque at the low end when compared to the L84 and L87. I’m not sure if that’s the ENTIRE story, since that explanation could also apply to the 3.0L Duramax LM2 and (even more so the) LZ0, and the diesels get the 10-speed… but that’s what I know thus far.

Why be concerned about something such as getting a 10 speed. My concern right now is whether I stay with GMC or for that matter Chevrolet, and spend 75 to 95 grand for these 10 speeds that are going through recalls for 23’ and 24’ models for defective valve bodies in the trans. Few indicents where the 2500 series at speed down the freeways, full lockups. Cannot fathom going down the freeway pulling a 32 footer with a couple of toys inside and this happening. Sad part, they say there is no fix. I woukd say so, until these mfg’s get back to everything made in the USA, and not Mexico or China. As a longtime GMC owner I’m heartened by this and must say, especially GMC, are grossly overpriced and I will now consider my next purchase will more than likely be Dodge Ram.
Get the 6.2 issues fixed FIRST, then we will discuss….
Thanks that it is Not ev

Wishing I could get a Police pursuit.
A simple update that I would like to see is the transmission gear displayed on the dash. My wife’s 2018 XT5 has it, why wouldn’t that be standard equipment?
How about offering a 2027 1500 SS. A truck that has a supercharged 6.2 (without the problems) pushing 700hp. Some carbon fiber to lighten it. AWD that can be turned off so you can do some drifting at the track. And let’s not forget the big brakes front and back.
If General Motors built this, we would buy it.
