Bowing for the 1940 model year, the Cadillac Series 62 (initially known as the 40-62) shared the C-Body platform with the Oldsmobile Series 90, Buick Roadmaster, and Pontiac Custom Torpedo. More dynamic than other Cadillac predecessors, the Series 62 featured five inches of additional width for increased interior hip and shoulder room, sleeker lines, and a curved rear window. With the advent for the Hydramatic automatic transmission that allowed the shifter to be moved to the steering column, the Series 62 could seat six comfortably.
After the end of World War II, American auto manufacturers took a couple of years to come up with new designs. The 1948 Cadillac Series 62 sported tail fins, a wider track, slightly shorter wheelbase, and increased interior room. The Series 62 represented the vast majority of Cadillac sales, with 34,213 62s selling for the abbreviated 1948 model year. Series 62 sales would continue to capture the lion’s share of Cadillac sales throughout the 1950s.
The Cadillac Series 62 entered its fourth generation with the 1954 model year. The all-new 62 was more aerodynamic, with a lower stance. A new egg crate grille was complemented by the chrome front bumper with its iconic Dagmars. The wraparound windshield was taken from the previous year’s Eldorado.
For 1955, the Cadillac Series 62 received a revamped grille and the parking lights were relocated directly beneath the headlights. Chrome and polished trim was redesigned to better accentuate the 62’s body lines, and tubeless tires became standard. Production for 1955 totaled 118,190 units.

My dad had a 55 Cadillac with two 4 barrel q jets. I wonder how many of those were made.
One of the fondest memories of my life. My dad and I driving his fire engine red ’55, white convertible top and white interior, from Brockton, MA to Cape Cod. Top down. Cruising. Loving life. I held a choice watermelon which we picked up in Avon, MA, on my lap the whole trip. I must’ve been about six at the time. Around 1971.
