The results are in for GM sales in Mexico for the 2024 calendar year, and it’s interesting to look at where its most popular cars in the North American country are built. Here are GM’s top 10 best-sellers in Mexico and their country of final assembly.

Chevy Aveo

The top five best-selling GM models in Mexico are all made in China. The Chevy Aveo, now in its fourth generation internationally, was by far The General’s best-seller in Mexico. Mexico still has a big market for affordable subcompact cars, and the Aveo is one of its favorites. It’s available as a sedan or a hatchback in Mexico, and Chevy markets the same car as the Chevy Sail and Chevy Optra in other markets.

The only other General Motors model to sell over 20,000 units in Mexico in 2024 was the Chevy S10 Max, also made in China. The S10 Max is a rebadged Maxus T60, which is a SAIC product. The Chevy Onix subcompact sedan, Chevy Tornado Van (a rebadged Wuling Hong Guang V), and Chevy Captiva crossover (a rebadged Baojun 530) all sold in similar numbers, and they’re all made in China.

If we combine the sales numbers for the Chevy Silverado, Chevy Cheyenne, and GMC Sierra, the full-size pickups become Mexico’s third-best-selling GM model. These are built domestically at the Silao Assembly plant and in the U.S.

Rounding out the list are the Chevy Groove, Tracker, and Trax crossovers, made in China, Brazil, and South Korea, respectively.

When production of the Chevy Onix moved from Mexico to China in 2022, General Motors said at the time that the move wouldn’t hurt sales. “GM has shown that thanks to its global manufacturing system, it can ensure the quality of its vehicles regardless of the location of the manufacturing plant, and the Mexican market has supported this,” GM Mexico public relations and communications manager Manuel Ávila Fonseca said. “The vehicles that we have recently added to the market and that are manufactured in different countries today are in the first places of their segments.”

In other words, General Motors bet that Mexican buyers wouldn’t care very much if their cars were made in China, and that bet is paying off. As long as the quality is there and the price is affordable, Mexican drivers have no problem with Chinese-built cars from an American brand.

  1. looks like the companies that are looking for trump to save them and build cars in USA are building alot of cars in china and shipping them anywhere they want! Why are we supporting GM ford?

  2. Why? Please support GM & Ford because they are both the only North American automobile companies-America & Canada. Chrysler owned by Stellantis is a Dutch conglomerate.
Finally, on April 2, Pres. Trump will be imposing tariffs on import automobiles by Toyota-Lexus, Honda-Acura, Nissan-Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, etc. It’s about time.

    1. Volkswagans are built in Chattanooga Tennessee. Subarus are built just south of Lafayette, Indiana. Mercedes built in southern U.S. etc. Import tariffs won’t hurt these foreign makers like tRump thinks it will. He is a very ignorant man/boy.

      1. Trump is aware there are foreign automakers manufacturing in the US. Its not intended to push them out. Its intended to encourage more US manufacturing from both domestic and foreign companies alike.

Trump has stated he has no problem with Chinese manufacturers selling in the US if they manufacture in the US.

        1. Changan , Geely, MG need to up their safety standards before being sold…
We get a Bronco Sport-Defender mish-mash called the Jetour T2. We also get the Haval 500 Tank which has a twin turbo V6.

The Haval 500 will likely pose a great threat to the 4runner….but QC of the Haval 500 is probably bad.

As for the Jetour T2? Well, that has 380 hp and will likely eat Bronco sport sales….but again QC IS A BIG ISSUE.

The problem? I just do not see the hype of these Chinese cars.

  3. When I see a list like this, it makes me understand why the President is doing what he doing. If we don’t stop it now the numbers just going keep going up

    1. My thoughts exactly. Mexico has plenty of capability to manufacture cars for their own market. But instead, they are virtually all brought in from China, essentially making only cars dependent on the US market in Mexico, but the rest all imported from China.

This is why we have tariffs folks. Otherwise, we would land up like Mexico and all our cars imported from China we zero models produced at home.

  4. Idk what is worse, that their most popular model sells less than Chevy corvettes do in the USA or that their equivalent to a Malibu costs almost 30K USD.

People keep thinking chin@ is a cheap place to make things cause labor, but don’t understand that how they can get by with 50¢/hr labor is companies like foxcon have to also provide food, housing and transportation for their workers and in reality total overhead cost for labor ultimately runs ~15-20$/hr despite their poor labor wages, and their quality turnaround is pathetic. China’s real advantage is the fact they build a new coal plant every week, and have no environment regulations, which is great for steel and raw material products, but anything that’s meticulous, it’s almost as cheap to build in America or Europe.

  5. That Aveo 5-door is sweet.

    1. Idk. A 1.4l daowoo engine, cheap steel that I’m guessing has minimal rust prevention, ditto the paint, and probably a CVT that replicates what was on the spark, not the current Malibu. (Belt is used as the clutch instead of a torque converter and has immense belt strain) Yet still cost 14K like the Chevy spark, despite that one being made in Korea.

This is about factory allocation. Mexico poverty doesn’t have the demand to use one of their factories for small car production, and all large/medium cars have more sales margins in USA Canada, so they’re bringing in a couple thousand cars from factories that produce 100K+ per year and pulling them from the markets where they make small cars.

      1. The Aveo is basically a competitor to the Yaris or Toyota Aygo……so is built that way. To be as affordable as possible.

The problem? The poor management SIMPLY CANNOT understand that such vehicles are actually needed instead of shoving trucks and SUVs….

        1. The spark that was imported from Korea and the “aveo” of 2008-2012 was batter build than this. It has a newer, larger engine, a more robust manual transmission or gen 2 CVT, and had sufficient rust prevention. It’s the little things like a galvanized steel floor, mud guards and an engine with a timing chain vs timing belt that makes all the difference, and adds up to an additional 3-5K per unit. This new aveo scream Yugo to me.

          1. Again, while I understand these issues, some people evidently might not consider it if they are buying an economy car…..
So they wil buy it anyways

  6. I’d love two of the Chevrolet Tornado Vans, one in a work van variant, and one in a wagon van variant. Don’t need a “bloated” vehicle for my needs. Come on Mary … make it happen.

    1. From what I understand, these vans are basically a “Hiace City” competitor, and probably undercut the Hiace city by a good margin , given their so-so QC….
