When it comes to answering life’s big questions, YouTube is not infrequently a good source of answers. For example – what happens when you replace the wheels on a C5 Corvette with saw blades and drive it on a frozen lake? Now, one particularly crazy YouTuber is finding out, as documented in the following viral video.
Coming to us from Westen Champlin, there’s no shortage of failure points when it comes to this particular plan. Nevertheless, Champlin and his crew are committed to making it happen, even if it means risking a dip in the frosty waters of Minnesota.
Prior to taking the Corvette onto the frozen lake, Champlin first tests it on gravel and dirt. The results? Well, not so great. The saw blades dig into the ground and the ride is incredibly unstable. On softer surfaces, the car just gets stuck.
Despite these issues, the team pushes ahead with their plan. To that end, Champlin and his team modify a Subaru WRX for additional support, creating homemade studded tires by drilling a series of holes per tire and sealing them with bolts and Flex Seal. The DIY studded tires work surprisingly well, allowing the WRX to drift across the ice with ease. However, after about 20 minutes of fun, the WRX engine blows, likely due to a spun rod bearing, marking the car’s unfortunate demise.
Other fun projects in the video include a converted minivan that’s made into an ice fishing shack. Using a concrete saw, the team cuts holes in the minivan floor, allowing them to fish directly from inside the vehicle.
Finally, around the 30-minute mark, it’s time for the C5 Corvette’s ultimate test on the frozen lake. Will the plan work, or is this wild thing just a big recipe for disaster? Hit play to find out for yourself:

Can’t beat a Chevy engine. The rest of the car, comme ci, comme ça.
Some guy probably used to rub that car with a diaper and be paranoid about it ever getting caught in the rain. Now two fat guys are beating it like a Grand Canyon rental mule for ‘likes’ from ret*rds on a website owned by foreigners. This is why America is broken.
Jim, Hillbilly heaven.
That is how hillbillies have fun.
Wait and see how many thumbs down I get from that remark.
Is he too fat or too stupid to wear a seatbelt?
Or both??
If you’re talking about on the lake, you don’t wear a seatbelt on a lake.
You never wear a seatbelt when driving on a frozen lake.
OK GM Authority, you losing credibility with this story! What a waste of nice C5 Corvette. Kinda sad.
Agreed. Stupid and too trashy for GMA to put out there
