President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on North American neighbors being postponed at the last minute gives credence to the idea that the president was using tariffs as a bargaining chip rather than as serious policy proposals. The United Auto Workers (UAW) is pro-tariff but doesn’t like Trump “using factory workers as pawns in a fight over immigration or drug policy.”
“The UAW supports aggressive tariff action to protect American manufacturing jobs as a good first step to undoing decades of anti-worker trade policy,” opens an official statement from the UAW. It goes on to say the union supports the Trump admin’s use of tariffs to curb plant closures in the U.S. but accuses Trump’s policies of being “anti-worker” for “dissolving collective bargaining agreements and gutting the National Labor Relations Board.”
The UAW urges President Trump to renegotiate America’s “broken trade deals,” specifically naming the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The UAW accuses a “corporate trade regime” of devastating the American and global working class through what it sees as trade negotiations that are unfair to workers.
The United Auto Workers officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president last summer, shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. The UAW has not endorsed a Republican for president since Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign in 1972; every endorsement by the union since then has been for a Democrat candidate.
The relationship between UAW President Shawn Fain and President Donald Trump has been contentious. Last summer, Fain repeatedly called out Trump as “a complete disaster for the working class” while endorsing the Democratic Party.
“We’ve got a president in the White House who wants to stand with the working class, and we’ve made incredible gains over the past three-and-a-half years with this president,” Fain said in July, referencing President Biden.
As for the tariff threats in question, Trump arranged for a 25 percent tariff on all goods coming to the U.S. from Mexico and Canada to go into effect this week. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau both conceded to Trump’s demands of greater border security to slow the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants into the States, so both tariffs were put on hold for 30 days.

Eff the UAW
Sounds like some crybaby got snubbed and isn’t done whining about it? Need a tissue?
UAW aka Unemployed Auto Workers.
Sean Fain, King of the recalls.
Fain is just another liberal elite hack. The UAW and the Democrat party have left the working class that built the unions behind.
“Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau conceded to Trump’s demands of greater border security…”
That’s a blatantly false statement.
Trudeau had already committed to invest $1.3B to bolster border security in early Dec. 2024, long before TRump was even inaugurated. BTW, less than 1% of fentanyl and illegal immigrants cross the Canadian border into the States compared to Mexico. So TRump’s strong-arm tactics of creating chaos, bullying, threats, coercion, extortion, and intimidation was simply a lot of nonsense about nothing. Nevertheless, TRump declared victory… as he always does. Pathetic and extremely dangerous.
Trudeau committed to it, but hadn’t actually done anything yet.
Trudeau is notorious for broken promises.
Trump forced him to actually do it
Actually, he had, but no sense providing facts to a mindless more 0n like you.
All trumpets are mindless.
Majority of Americans must be morons then. Lol
Republicans winners
Democrats losers
Judging from all the thumbs down votes, there is clearly no point in presenting facts to brain-dead more ones who support a despicable egomaniacal ignorant self-serving liar racist and fascist the likes of TRump… a man-child who has absolutely no respect for the rule of law, the US Constitution, and the American democratic system of government. Good luck America. Under TRump, you will surely become a completely isolated and scorned s-hole. Now, bring on the thumbs down.
Kei, You are spot on.
All of those lovely descriptors of TRump (hehehe, I said Rump) after you just witnessed 4 years of sniffy 10% Biden and Word Salad Harris? Kel, keep that libby head in the sand and Vance will easily be your next President.
You must be referring to the corrupt Biden administration. The worst most corrupt use of the DOJ and the FBI just to name a few the agencies Biden’s administration corrupted…
and fain is just another open borders puppet.
Wanna cry about it?
#WINNING
You all asked for this tariff situation and knew about the possibility of this happening before you voted for the convicted felon. One could wonder if wage cuts are coming. If those plants are relocated to the US, be prepared for higher vehicle purchase costs.
Pelosi and the NY lawfare cabal gave you names to “pin the tail on the Republican” and you play right along, Rog…
So we should just roll over and keep the status quo as it stands?
Roger, Wake up from your extremely long nap..
Fain is an “IDIOT” plain and simple.
We finally have a President elected by the majority of people in this country that want change!
Get on board or get out of the way..
If you want to be like Russia, why don’t you move there?
Oh boy, still on the Russia, Russia, Russia kick. Here’s some sound advice: filing everything under Russia cost you lefties the election. It’s shallow.
It is amazing the haters have such distain for their own well being. I have collected over one million dollars from my TEAMSTERS PENSION! Life is hard, it is even harder if your stupid. Having an argument with an intelligent person is difficult, having one with a stupid one is impossible.
Didn’t Biden just last year “donate” $96 BILLION of taxpayer money to bail out the Central States Pension Fund? Learn the difference between “your” stupid and “you’re” stupid. It might make you look less “stupid”
Orange Jesus just released 2.2 billion gallons of water from California reservoirs with no purpose that will harm farmers this summer. Released criminals that harmed police, has failed at every business venture. What should we expect giving a retarded chimp a ball peen hammer and turning it loose in a china shop?!
And who was it that murdered a nursing student in Georgia? And who was it that set a woman on fire in the NYC subway? Both acts were done by ILLEGALS. One had been deported multiple times, but your “hero” allowed them to re-enter.
God bless the UAW, and all labor unions.
I would say totally disband the union, GM and other auto manufacturers could afford to pay better and hire better workers, fire worse ones, improve productivity and quality, at a lower cost to consumers if there wasn’t always strikes and lousy workers in the system. Better yet make GM a Co-op, with the CEO getting standard salary so he/she would take the job for the love of the job, not the money.
If the union were to disband, all that would happen is that workers would get less and Mary would get a bigger bonus that she doesn’t deserve in the first place.
And the rest of us could afford the cars you build. Your outrageous salaries and bonuses drive up the price of everything where you live
So Tim you are saying eliminate choice because people choose democratically to belong to a UNION. Sounds like you do not understand or belong to a UNION.
If you work in a ” right to work ” state, you can opt out of union membership, and pay no dues. If not your screwed.
Gary Wolfe,
You’re not screwed. If you do not want to work in a union shop don’t. Go get a job somewhere else.
“NO AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE WILL EVER PERSUADE AN IDIOT.” -MARK TWAIN
You don’t think auto manufacturers need a choice? I guess they do have a choice, go out of country or go out of business. Not really a good selection.
No I’m not union. My pay is my value, not the collective lack of value in the entire work force.
For all you UNION haters enjoy cheering for your favorite Super Bowl team because every single player belongs to a union. Baseball union, Firefighters, union, Police union, Nurses union. Value is subjective plus unions are not just about economic justice.
Are the shoes on your feet union made? How about the clothes on your back? How about those kitchen appliances? How about your electronics? Your tools? Have you ever shopped at WalMart or a non-union grocery? I have a neighbor that works at the UAW Ford plant in Sharonville Ohio. Last year he had a new roof installed. It was installed by a bunch of non-union Hispanics. Yeah, you union members love the wages but won’t shop for the union label.
How about making the auto industry co-op based?
FAIN BRAIN IS A MORONIC LIBERAL A**WAD!!!
“From a Canadian perspective, Donald, you seriously pissed us off.”
“Canadians are upset, don’t trust Trump, and lost trust in the United States as well.”
“You have poked the polar bear”
“So, Donald, come back at us a second time. It’s gonna hurt even more.”
Canada is united. This is our guarantee.
You are correct, Kei. And anyone that gives a thumb down to your comments are the same as Trump. Try putting that 25% tariff on Canada again, and you will see what happens. America will hurt bad. What does it feel like to be hated by all? Canada has the rest of the world as an ally. Let’s try to get along. Stop being bullies, because one day, the bully gets theirs!
Hey little tiny buzzard when I have a choice between union and non- union I choose union. When I have a choice between American and foreign I chose American unlike #47 who sells golden tennis shoes, bibles and a clothing line made in CHI-NA!
If Biden (harris) would of got 8 + years, there would not be an American company to buy from. Think!!
Shawn Fain is a butt hurt democrat. what else is he going to say?
Hey little buzzard Central Pension Fund received 36 billion not 96 billion. With trump tax cuts for corporations in 2017 they received a windfall of 700 billion used for stock buy backs. Republicans are good at dangling a shiny object in one hand while they pick your pocket with the other.
