Trump Tariffs Could Add $5,790 To The Price Of Cars, According To Data Analysis

If U.S. President Donald Trump carries through on his threat to impose 25-percent tariffs on imports of a wide range of goods from Canada and Mexico, the price of an average new car could rise by $5,790, according to a new study.

Investment bank Benchmark Co. crunched the numbers, as reported by CNBC, and predicts the tariffs – if enforced – will boost the average new car price to $54,500.

President Donald Trump

This price represents a 12-percent increase from 2024’s average new car price in the United States. The tariffs would have their strongest effect on the automotive industry because of the size and extent of auto-sector trade between the three countries.

Benchmark found that 22 percent of the vehicles sold in the U.S. are produced in Canada or Mexico. For vehicles produced in American factories, 40 percent of the components come from one of the two neighboring nations. Mexico supplies almost triple the amount of both cars and vehicle components to the U.S.A. than does Canada in terms of dollar value.

The GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico could be affected by Trump tariffs.

Cody Acree, the analyst who provided the figures, remarked that the auto sector will be hardest hit by the potential tariffs because of the “sheer size of trade dollars, the complexity of the intertwined supply and manufacturing channel that has been cultivated over decades, and the sheer number of our companies that participate in support of this key consumer industry.”

The CEO of GM’s cross-town rival Ford, Jim Farley, said that “so far what we’re seeing is a lot of cost, and a lot of chaos” as a result of Trump’s policies. However, he also observed that “President Trump has talked a lot about making our U.S. auto industry stronger, bringing more production here, more innovation in the U.S.” Farley added that “if his administration can achieve that, it would be one of … the most signature accomplishments” of Trump’s second presidency.

Trump slapped tariffs on Canada almost immediately on taking office. However, he then suspended tariffs on Mexico until March and gave Canada a 30-day grace period, raising the possibility that the tariffs will not actually go into effect but are intended to give the U.S. a stronger position in negotiations with its neighbors.

While GM produces many vehicles north and south of the border, including the Cadillac Optiq, Chevy BrightDrop, GMC TerrainChevy Blazer, Chevy Blazer EV, Chevy Equinox, Chevy Equinox EV and Chevy Silverado, GM CFO Paul Jacobson claims the automaker is ready with a mitigation plan in case the tariffs actually take effect.

Trade was started to help reduce prices. You can’t have a strong economy without a low product price. If it’s to expensive to make something in your own country then you source it from somewhere else. If you hade to make TVs for instance in the USA the price of the TV would rise by 300%. Why ? Labor rates for one thing. Trump will raise the inflation rate massively in the U.S. just wait for it…….

Another lie perpetrated by Fox News that Dominion voting machines were rigged. Any news is good news when it comes to the bank account of a news agencies owner. That’s what Rupert Murdoch thought. It cost him plenty. Over a billion dollars . That’s okay, he’s got it.
There is no such law, unreasonable bias. That is silly.
It makes me laugh when I hear people talk about how much money General Motors makes on individual vehicles or models. General Motors does not report what it makes on individual vehicles. And that is why Wall Street has priced the automakers profits to earnings PE so low.

I lived it. I saw many GM plants in the ’80s go from 10,000 employees to less than 2,000 employees in about a decade. All do to automation. I worked at one.
This is for all the misinformed people that think the overpaid union workers at GM are to blame for high vehicle prices, nothing could be further than the truth. GM reduced wages and benefits for new employees years ago. A newly hired production worker at GM makes a little over $16 an hour. Some fast food places pay better than that.

    3. It would obviously disrupt the supply chain network to move all manufacturing back to the US. Disrupting this network would lead to increased production costs due to the need to establish new facilities, retrain workers, and source materials domestically, offsetting all of the potential savings. Even Ford is saying this.

Foreign autos were far and few between. As they took foothold in the US during the 60s and 70s, the foreign manufactures engaged in protectionism. Sales of domestic vehicles abroad have been hamstrung ever since due to tariffs imposed by foreign governments. Reciprocity is overdue and in order. It’s just that simple.

Fast forward to today… And looking at issues that the Big 2.5 have today, have they really retained any lessons learned over the long run?

      1. One thing missing from your history lesson is the “big 3” didn’t have crap as much as they were forced to change way to quickly (EV’s ring a bell anyone?) they had excellent pickups, land barge cars with better than Toyota reliability, but the oil embargo and failure of Jimmy Carter’s administration with inflation meant that Japanese cars currently being sold in Japan, and hadn’t changed for a decade fit the ticket. The problem with the 70’s car failures was the attempt to do a complete 180 turn in 6-12 months with no alternative other than bankruptcy.

        Reply
        1. Nah, not missing. Big Auto knew best and ignored the reality of what customers wanted back then. Fast forward… Big 2.5 did not take hybrids seriously. Toyota developed expertise and dominates this space today. Big 2.5 did not take EVs seriously. Tesla came in and forced everyone to pay attention with their first mover advantage. Now it’s a game of catch up. Everyone got the same government mandates at the same time. Big 3 responded with 140hp V8 barges. Foreign makers responded with fuel sipping econoboxes.

It’s all fear mongering tactics that don’t work on free minded individuals. I for one, wake up every morning with a smile on my face and a sense of relaxation, compared to the past 4 years!

Also, no one is forcing any of you to buy a new vehicle. If prices rise, don’t buy, and they will be forced to lower the prices. The problem is Americans think they need everything RIGHT NOW and all the shiny new vehicles and technology. No wonder why we have a trillion dollars of credit card debt, and people who are $10k in negative equity in car loans. it’s complete and utter ignorance and lack of education!

The government calculates that in. They figure If you start collecting at 62 yrs. old, you will receive less money per month, but collect for more years. If you start collecting at 72 yrs. old you will receive more money per month, for less years. This is based on the government’s projection of life expectancy. They have it down to a science. You get less for more years, or more for Less years. It generally works out about the same. There are exceptions. Some people live to 100 yrs. old. And some people die before they collect anything. Most people choose their wife as a surviving spouse. This will reduce your Social Security payment. Some people have to pay part of their social security to their ex-wife or wives. This will reduce their Social Security payment.
Before home computers Social Security would send you statements in the mail. Now you can go online to Social Security and see what your income was for every year, how much you have paid into Social Security, and what you are projected to receive from Social Security based on what age you retire. You can also look into your father’s Social Security, you will need his social security number to do that.
I don’t know why your father got ripped off. Maybe they have the wrong amounts on his yearly earnings, and what he has been paying in to Social Security. Or maybe your father received a lot of his income from under the counter jobs, where it was neither reported as income and no social security tax was paid in.
I hope this helps you. You can at least go online and check out your own Social Security account. I know retirement seems like a long time off for you. As you get older the years go by faster and faster. You will be retiring before you know it. Just remember to have fun as you go through life.
          Endeavor to persevere,
          John Z.

  10. Let him do what we hired him for. You have to give him time to negotiate. $5700.00 is an inflated number created to try and make Trump look bad. If you say we have to build in another country to be competitive, think how that will affect your job. Plants move you’re flipping burgers for a whopper $15.00 an hour. That man was handed a total train wreck. He can’t clean it up in 25 days. Think outside the box!!!

    1. I’m thinking outside the box, and I think 5700 is a conservative figure. Perhaps you want to buy a new Equinox that the list price is $40,000 (for example to make the math easier for the cult followers) now impose his 25% tariff, in my old math way of figuring it, that will add $10,000 to the price of that $40,000 dollar Equinox. Will all cultists pay $50,000 for a $40,000 Equinox?

      1. Or GM can simply move Equinox production to one of several underutilized plants they have in the US

Listen to everyone. All you have to do is look back 40-45 years and see were things we’re going to understand why we are where we are at now. Keep pointing your finger, that won’t solve anything !

  14. Donald Trump hates the unions.
Trump doesn’t like to hire union workers because they have the power to make him pay the contractors and not just rip them off.
Not paying people that do work for Donald Trump is what he’s all about.
Prior to Trump’s first presidency he hired undocumented people on his construction sites. He also had undocumented people working as staff at Mar-a-Lago.
    Morally bankrupt, narcissistic, pathological liar.

  15. That’s OK, we just want those jobs back into our country. If the American GM customer has to spend a little extra for a couple of years during this recover effort, then so be it. Remember, it wasn’t the GM “customers” that got us in this fix; it was GM’s decision (along with politics) that sought cheaper labor for increased profit margins. I say, — America first!

  17. There would be no unions if it wasn’t for the abuse employees took from large greedy corporations. Threats, physical and mental abuse were commonplace by employers.
Everyone in America benefits from the unions.
Health and safety laws. 40 hour work weeks. Overtime pay. Paid holidays. The list goes on and on. And laws written to back these up. These were not gifts from corporations. These were things that honest hard-working people fought for. Union haters, hate to see you getting better pay and benefits. They suggest that people with good paying jobs should come down to their level to make things more affordable for them. I suggest they should live within their means and purchase things affordable to them. Better yet go out and get a better job.

Trump is an international embarrassment. The whole world laughs at him.
You can see his dementia is progressing. His father died from Alzheimer’s disease.

Doesn’t bother me, I wont be purchasing a GM product any longer since they are bent on EV’s and since they don’t provide Auto Android and Apple Car Play any longer… All deal breakers!

That’s great, it would be nice that all vehicles had more domestic content.
42,934 that is the total number of all corvettes produced in 2024. According to GM that is a typical number of Corvettes manufactured. In the grand scheme of things that is a relatively low number of vehicles. It is keeping people in good jobs. There are 377 different labor unions in Kentucky. Who knew ?

  22. “I don’t believe that American consumers will see any meaningful increase in the prices that they face,” – Janet Yellen 5/2024 when Biden added more tariffs to China.

The hypocrisy from the left shines brighter than the sun.

This, this is why as someone who grew up democrat, I gave up on the party. They spent all their energy lately blasting the other side for doing things and yet here they are doing the same. And ontop of that being more concerned with woke agendas than actually pretending to care about the working Americans. Its become so brazen they don’t even pretend anymore when their front runner stated she would have done nothing different than the old man she was meant to replace. And then they wonder, why they lost even the popular vote. But they will never learn. Orange man bad and thats that.

  23. Too bad so many people do not know their American history. The UAW and other unions around the U.S. were formed and flourished because the corporations during the late 1800s and early 1900s ripped off the workers on their pay as well as establishing horrendous working conditions. Do not blame the UAW or workers, blame the greedy corporations and the rich like Trump who does not care about the middle class.
As an Advanced Placement history teacher I know the facts and the fact that Trump was and is the worst president we have ever had. Even James Buchanan is laughing at the stupidity of Trump.

  24. Go back and look at history for a real union hater, Henry Ford, and look at what Ford workers had to go through to get justice. As far as the ’70’s and ’80’s are concerned, you can lay blame on GM’s Roger Smith for the total crap that they were putting out the door at the time. We live in a global economy, and the cultist Republicans were once free trade advocates. Trump cannot change this fact. Being in a global economy, we once were a major goods supplier, think after WWII when most of the world economies were in ruin. We now have shifted from a goods supplier to a services supplier. We cannot make everything that we consume. Some jobs may return to the U.S. as labor rates and inefficient manufacturing practices in other parts of the world can be countered with automation and AI. However, we can not return to the past where we were the sole manufacturing concern in the world.

  25. Why? Please support GM & Ford because they are both the only North American automobile companies-America & Canada. Chrysler owned by Stellantis is a Dutch conglomerate.
Finally, on April 2, Pres. Trump will be imposing tariffs on import automobiles by Toyota-Lexus, Honda-Acura, Nissan-Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, etc. That’s a lot of import automobile companies! It’s about time.

Let me tell you, If other American autos are built like this Piece of S#@& , We are in a sad place building and accepting vehicles built out of country like this . This Dodge has spent so much time in the dealership while under warranty then any other vehicle I have ever owned. So if we can get are vehicles built ONLY in the USA, I’m for it, Because this multi country built vehicle with non US made parts is stupid and doesn’t work for me .
