Trump Administration Suspends EV Charger Funding Program

The Trump Administration’s U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has sent a memo to the states suspending the approval of EV infrastructure deployment plans. It has to do with funds administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) via the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

“The new leadership of the [DOT] has decided to review the policies underlying the implementation of the NEVI Formula Program,” reads the memo that was sent on Thursday. “Accordingly, the current NEVI Formula Program Guidance dated June 11, 2024, and all prior versions of this guidance are rescinded.”

In other words, uncommitted grant money previously given to the states to build charging stations is being revoked by the feds.

“As [a] result of the rescission of the NEVI Formula Program Guidance, FHWA is also immediately suspending the approval of all State Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment plans for all fiscal years. Therefore, effective immediately, no new obligations may occur under the NEVI Formula Program until the updated final NEVI Formula Program Guidance is issued and new State plans are submitted and approved,” the memo continues.

The FHWA will publish an updated draft of NEVI guidance for public comment in the spring. Following the public comment period, the FHWA will finalize its updated guidance based on feedback from the public. The memo assures the states that current financial commitments will not be disrupted.

So far, the NEVI program, which was first implemented in 2022, has yielded 51 charging stations for a total of 224 charging ports across 14 states.

We reported in January that the Trump Administration may eliminate federal EV charging subsidies like the NEVI program along with the federal EV tax credit. There’s also a good chance that Biden-era fuel economy standards will be scrapped, which effectively require automakers to sell EVs to satisfy. Trump’s “Unleashing American Energy” spells a plan for “considering the elimination of unfair subsidies and other ill-conceived government-imposed market distortions that favor EVs over other technologies,” which likely includes the EV tax credit.

    1. John Z – you’re right, he’s killing it. He killed DEI. He killed USAID and now he’s killing Biden’s legacy. Next up the Department of Education and the Green New Deal.

      1. Do you even know what DEI stands for? Spell it out. Own what you are really against.

People against it are really just this generation’s bigoted segregationist.

          Here gm’s statement on hiring:

          Equal Employment Opportunity Statement

The policy of General Motors is to extend opportunities to qualified applicants and employees on an equal basis regardless of an individual’s age, race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or veteran status.

          “Regardless of…”

How is DEI not the complete opposite of this?

  4. The Federal government should’ve never embarked upon efforts to build EV charging stations to start with. They’ve never built gas stations so why is supplying energy for vehicles suddenly a function of government? Let the private sector build and maintain all EV charging facilities. They’ll do it much better and cheaper.

    1. So the democrats can get kick backs. Everything they touch gets siphoned to shell accounts.

  5. Great news !! The government needs to get out of our lives we will decide what to drive . They should not be giving our tax money or subsidies for one technology over another. If you want an electric car then buy one on your money not mine.

  6. This stinks of Musky corruption. NEVI program is a major threat to the Tesla charger network. Tesla hasn’t been able to get many of the contracts, because of the NEVI rules, so Elon gets the felon to slow it down and update the rules, to better favor Tesla.

Massive conflict of interests, by a foreign immigrant wielding way too unelected power in the White House.
