The Chevy Silverado is by far GM’s best-selling product, and second only to Ford F-Series on the U.S. sales charts. Combined production of the light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500, the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado HD and the fully electric Chevy Silverado EV is handled through no less than five assembly plants, one of which is located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
The GM Oshawa plant’s production capacity is lower than those of the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, the GM Flint plant in Michigan and the GM Silao plant in Mexico, yet it still cranked out an estimated 150,000 units during the 2024 calendar year. It’s the only plant that can build both the Silverado 1500 and the Silverado HD. Meanwhile, the Chevy Silverado EV is manufactured at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.
We previously covered the fact that only Crew Cab configurations are built at the Ontario plant, and that no Chevy Silverado ZR2 units are built there either. We also indicated that Silverado HD units built at the facility are equipped with either the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine or the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine. Meanwhile, the only powertrain installed in Silverado 1500 units at the plant is the 5.3L V8 L84 engine.
GM Authority dug a little deeper to figure out more interesting Chevy Silverado HD build combination details. Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country trim levels are built in Oshawa, all in Crew Cab Standard Bed configuration with single rear wheels (SRW). No dual rear wheel (DRW) units are produced in Canada.
The Oshawa plant’s paint shop also includes a limited number of colors. Silverado HD units can be sprayed in Black (color code GBA), Lakeshore Blue Metallic (GXP), Red Hot (G7C), Slate Gray Metallic (GNO), Sterling Gray Metallic (GXD) and Summit White (GAZ). Trucks painted in Cypress Gray (GBD), Iridescent Pearl Tricoat (G1W) and Radiant Red Tintcoat (GNT) are exclusively built at the Flint plant.

Essentially, the Oshawa plant maximizes production efficiency and costs by building the most popular Chevy Silverado HD configurations in the most sought-after paint colors.
If the Trump administration eventually imposes a 25-percent tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, GM said it could move some Silverado and Sierra pickup truck production from Silao to Fort Wayne, but that doesn’t involve the heavy-duty Chevy truck. As it stands, no matter which Silverado HD configuration buyers order, there is no way of knowing from which plant it will be built in between Flint and Oshawa, though we’re assuming GM is working to minimize shipping costs by keeping trucks in the respective countries in which they were built.
The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD received a mid-cycle refresh that rounded an updated front fascia on some trim levels, a revised Duramax diesel engine, towing capacity revisions, more upscale cabins in higher-end trim levels as well as paint color swaps. The 2024 model year also introduced the off-road-focused Silverado HD ZR2 and the even more extreme Silverado HD ZR2 Bison Edition. The 2025 Chevy Silverado HD received another bunch of changes, including the addition of the Trail Boss Package, some equipment reshuffling and paint color revisions.

Interested in what is exactly the new paint system is?
Seems like it is being treated as a trade secret.
Of course Paint systems are “trade secrets”. The automotive business is extremely competitive.
