GMC Sierra 1500 Recalled For Detaching Grille Deflectors

GM has issued a Safety Recall for certain 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks with an issue in which the front upper grille deflector may detach while the truck is being driven.

According to Safety Recall N242490120, only GMC Sierra units produced after the “2022 model year mid-cycle enhancement” are potentially affected.

The problem: affected 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks may be fitted with chrome grille deflectors attached via eight attachments. These attachments are defective and may fracture and break over time while in use. If all eight snap, the chrome grille deflector will detach from the truck while it is being driven.

The hazards: if the chrome grille deflector detaches from the GMC Sierra while the truck is in motion, the component suddenly detaching and flying off the vehicle and potentially striking others could increase the risk of a crash. Further, the deflector will become a road hazard while lying on the road surface and could cause a crash.

The fix: GM is currently developing a fix for the chrome grille deflector detachment hazard on the GMC Sierra. The automaker will notify both dealers and owners of record when the remedy becomes available.

Affected components: this issue affects the attachment points of the 2022 GMC Sierra chrome grille deflector, which are not correctly built to withstand the load put on them during driving. Owners may notice a rattling sound while driving from the grille deflector before it breaks off.

Affected vehicles: the affected vehicles include 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickups produced between November 9th, 2021 and September 29th, 2022 that are equipped with chrome grille deflectors. Trucks produced with non-chrome grille deflectors, and those made before the mid-cycle enhancement are unaffected and not included in this recall.

Number of affected vehicles: GM has used manufacturing records to determine that a total of 70,768 Sierra trucks may be affected by this issue.

Owners should: wait for GM to notify them and to develop a remedy for the grille deflector problem. GM will send out notices to dealerships on January 6th, 2025 and will mail notices to owners on March 24th, 2025.

Once a fix is developed, additional notification letters will be mailed. The fix will be made free of charge and owners will be reimbursed for any related repairs. The toll-free telephone below can be used to reach GMC for any further questions:

Note: GM Authority has previously covered owner reports of grille deflectors breaking off at highway speeds. Some Reddit posts indicate chrome grille deflectors snapping off new vehicles after as little as 9,000 miles of driving.

GM has also issued a stop sale order for affected 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks.
