GMC Dealer Inventory Below National Days Supply Average In December 2024

Inventory of new vehicles at GMC dealerships across the United States fell to a 70 days supply in December 2024, meaning the average dealer had enough vehicles to continue sales at current rates for 70 days.

This also means that the brand’s inventory is quite close to the industry’s optimum level of a 60 days supply, and is below the U.S. auto market average of a 75 days supply according to the latest research by Cox Automotive.

GMC is effectively following the overall market trend, which saw vigorous sales and an 8.5 percent drop in inventory compared to November 2024. According to Cox executive analyst Erin Keating the inventory plunge was caused by an “ideal blend of improved consumer sentiment, bigger discounts and evident optimism in the market.”

Keating also notes that “compact SUVs and full-size pickups continue to top the charts for new-vehicle sales.” With GMC relying on sales of its popular GMC Sierra pickup truck, this trend likely also helped to relieve inventory backlog for Big Red during December.

The GMC inventory level is down from the 86 days supply at dealerships in November 2024. It’s also slightly below the 73 days supply observed in December 2023. While Cox doesn’t provide a breakdown, previous sales and inventory patterns indicate the lowest days supply of individual models are probably those of the GMC Savana van and three-row GMC Acadia crossover, while the Sierra EV pickup and GMC Hummer EV likely have the highest days supply.

In keeping with generally strong year-end luxury vehicle sales, days supply is currently low for vehicles carrying a price of $80,000 or greater. These high-end models have a 62 days supply on average. Some premium brands have very low inventory at 2024’s end, with Lexus at a 21 days supply and BMW at a 47 days supply.

After rising above three million vehicles in October 2024, the overall supply of vehicles dipped to 2.88 million in December, though this is an 18.1-percent increase relative to total inventory in December 2023.
