Looking Ahead
Sales of the Chevy Express and GMC Savana were quite healthy this quarter, outpacing the segment individually as well as together. Sales of both models were essentially flat for 2024.
The Express/Savana is an old vehicle that dates back to the 1990s. The duo remains the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin and are even the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Meanwhile, the field offers substantially more modern and attractive products.
GM previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However, the automaker seems to have canceled these plans, instead electing to simply rebadge the all-electric BrightDrop vans as Chevys.
Even so, GM has sold over three million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.
About Chevrolet Express
The 2025 Chevy Express drops the audio system upgrade – the AM/FM stereo with MP3 player and USB port – along with several other features and options. In practical terms, this means that the 2025 Express will no longer have a CD player or USB port, while Bluetooth connectivity is available through a dealer-installed connection kit. It also offers a new rearview camera mirror.

this thing is a dinosaur – basically been around since 1996 with some tweaking over the years. 30 years without a major complete from the ground up makeover is unbelievable in today’s super hyper auto world. GM certainly has gotten its monies worth out of this vehicle. I would think you could take the Silverado chassis and drop a van body over it . . . I’m guessing it’s not that simple.
tmw…This dinosaur still beats the Ford Transit all to pieces. Mainly its twice as reliable and parts are readily available and interchangeable. The problem with sales was that Ms. Barra wouldn’t allow production even though people like myself were begging for one. She had it in her head it would become all electric. She bet on the wrong horse.
Yea …….. Right ! If your a dealer or U-Haul, or Budget rental and are buying 10 or more you can get one. None available within 50 miles of Providence R.I. unless your buying multiple units.
I bought a new Transit van in 2015. No regrets.
GM vans continue to be stuck in the 20th century, with no choice of roof heights – only low height is available. This limitation is inexcusable for a vehicle used for business purposes.
Transit vans are available in three roof heights. My mid-height Transit van makes deliveries and pick-ups for items that won’t fit in GM’s motorized dinosaur vans. As I said earlier – inexcusable.
Don’t know why pickup trucks are so popular.. Body on frame vans are so much more useful and practical. The pickup truck camper shell or a tonneau cover usually wind up covering an open bed anyway. How about dropping a van style body on a pickup frame? Nissan did it it and it was quite popular.
I saw a Ford Transit low roof next to a GMC van. They both looked the same size. Therefore, I want a GMC Savanna cargo because the Transit is effing ughlee and don’t get me started on the dinky looking Ram van. I just wish the GMC had a 6-cylinder diesel.
GM has the 3 liter diesel I-6 but who knows why they won’t put it in the Express/Savana vans. They used to offer the 2.8 liter diesel in the same chassis.
These year over year sales figures are misleading. The reason they are up for Q4 is that production was so slow in the last half of 2023. There was a complete stop on all passenger vans and cargo vans with crew seating. They didn’t start 2024 passenger van production until late March of ’24. GM is totally missing the boat on these vans. Dealerships can’t sell what they can’t get.
