GM Oshawa Plant Only Builds Chevy Silverado 1500 Units With This Engine

The light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500 is immensely popular, serving as one of The General’s primary profit generators. As such, GM builds the Chevy Silverado 1500 in three separate locations in order to keep up with demand, including the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, and the GM Silao plant in Mexico, and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada. Interestingly, the GM Oshawa plant only builds units of the Chevy Silverado 1500 with one specific engine.

As it turns out, all Silverado 1500 units built at Oshawa are equipped with the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 engine (355 horsepower, 383 pound-feet of torque). Further engine options for the pickup include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine (310 horsepower, 430 pound-feet of torque), the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine (420 horsepower, 460 pound-feet of torque), and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax (305 horsepower, 495 pound-feet of torque), but even so, every unit of the Chevy Silverado 1500 rolling off the line at Oshawa cradles the 5.3L V8 L84.

As a result, the Oshawa plant does not produce any units of the Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom, as the Custom trim is powered exclusively by the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine. Not only that, but Oshawa only produces units of the Silverado 1500 in certain Crew Cab configurations, while the Silverado ZR2 isn’t built at Oshawa either.

Interestingly, the GM Oshawa plant is currently the only facility producing both the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Chevy Silverado HD. Oshawa also leverages a different paint application process than GM’s other pickup plants. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Chevy Silverado HD, units of the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup produced at the Oshawa plant roll off the line with either one of the two available engines, namely the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, and the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax, rated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.

  1. Always have built quality out of that plant. Has been GM’s flex line it seems for awhile too, always changing it up based on demand or model year change.

    1. everyone brings up quality at this shop. What they don’t mention is the fact that 75% of the employees are new hires 3 years or less. That much inexperience drops quality numbers. I would like to see their daily direct run numbers. Every shop has bad days, Flint Truck runs the highest quality numbers I’ve seen in 25 years with GM working at 5 different factories.
