GM Has A New Fix For Flexing Chevy Colorado Roofs

Some third-generation Chevy Colorado owners are experiencing roof flexing issues, particularly in automatic carwashes. The issue arises from the force of the industrial air dryer at the end of the carwash, which can cause a loud pop sound in the roof. A dealership Service Bulletin was issued last year in an effort to fix the pickup roofs, but now, GM has seemingly come up with an even better solution.

The fix specifically applies to 2023-2025 Chevy Colorado models without the sunroof option (RPO CAC) and built before February 3rd, 2025. It’s a fairly simple fix that applies stiffening patches and a longitudinal roof bow to the underside of the problematic roof panel.

The stiffening panels are to be installed in five locations on the underside of the roof panel, all toward the front of the roof area. The headliner needs to be dropped but not entirely removed. Installation of the roof bow is a little more involved. The roof bow itself has pre-drilled holes where the rivets go, but it needs to be used as a template for holes to be drilled in the underside of the roof structure for said rivets. A depth-control device on the drill bit is recommended.

Once the holes are drilled, structural adhesive is to be applied to both ends of the roof bow. Additionally, panel vibration control material is applied along the length of the roof bow, and then it’s ready to rivet to the roof panel. Once the stiffening panels and roof bow are installed, the headliner is reinstalled, and the repair is complete.

The extra bracing and stiffening in the roof panel should prevent excessive flexing in automatic carwashes and prevent any excessive noise. Chevy Colorado owners who continue having problems after this repair is performed should contact their local GM service department, as something else might be wrong with the truck.

  1. Maybe they can retrofit Gen II Equinox’s. My wife has one. It’s been going on for years.

    1. Seriously. My 2015 Terrain does this and I just kind of figured it was normal. Thankfully I don’t used those washes much except in winter a few times. All hand washing otherwise.

  3. My 2024 Silverado roof pops loudly in the carwash. Made a nice dent in the roof too. I’ve looked at other current gen Silverados. All have the same dent. My dealer pretends it’s not a known issue. Really shameful.

  4. Surprised their fix wasn’t “GM recommends not using automatic car washes”.

And literally sticking band-aids on the panels isn’t much better.

  5. It only takes them 2+ years to have a patch fix for a problem that shouldn’t have happened to begin with. They should be ashamed of themselves. And the customer that had their roof dented in a car wash? What do they tell them? The unsightly dent helps aerodynamics?

    1. “And the customer that had their roof dented in a car wash? What do they tell them?”

GM: “Not responsible for damage caused by car washes”.
Car washes: “Not responsible for damage to vehicles”.

      IOW, middle fingers all around.

  6. My 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 has a very load rattle and pop from the blower. My solution is to place my hand on the inside roof above my hand and push up to support it until I’m no longer in the wash. Guess that’s what I get for not ordering the sunroof.

  7. I use a 2×4 inside to support mine. Use a “treated one” in case it would happen to burst.

  8. My 2024 Zr2 has problems with the lane assist not functioning at all. We took it to the dealership and they said there’s nothing they can do. That “the truck is too new”. They said they would put in a ticket with the engineers haven’t heard back from them in months.

  10. Gotta be honest, the Colorado/Canyon has gotten completely away from what they were originally designed to do. A light duty 2WD pickup, with maybe a AWD variant for the snow belt customers. Come on GM give us what we used to have, a dependable an reliable light duty, easy on the pocketbook (think money wise), a pickup that could be optioned into a great 4-Door Pickup that delivered great fuel economy, easy to get “in an out” (didn’t need side steps) and had great creature comforts … and was needed an wanted. And a much needed reg cab GM variant … look back as the very successful 2012 Colorado … we’d be a buyer right now for two of them right now, a reg cab an 4-door model … this would slap the heck outta the problem riddles Maverick. GM … build what we want an need.

  11. Let’s be honest. Going through those type of car washes is not the greatest thing for your vehicle. Especially the paint.
