Shortly after confirming that it will halt production at the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil for a month, General Motors announced that it has agreed to a partial layoff with the factory workers union.
The automaker’s Brazilian subsidiary has reached a partial dismissal agreement with the Gravataí Metalworkers Union (SINMGRA, its acronym in Portuguese) to suspend a group of workers at the GM Gravataí plant for more than two months. The measure will come into effect in the second half of April with the aim of adapting the production rate of the Chevy Onix to market demand.
“General Motors informs that it is in the process of negotiating with the Metalworkers Union of Gravataí for the adoption of a period of temporary suspension of employment contracts, which should partially affect production,” said GM Brazil in a statement. “The measure, if approved, aims to adapt production of the Gravataí plant, responsible for the Onix and Onix Plus models, to the current market demand,” the company added.
Specifically, the partial layoff agreement that GM reached with the workers’ union will affect between 700 and 1,000 employees on the two shifts at the GM Gravataí plant, as well as workers on systems installed in the area. The president of the union, Valcir Ascaria, confirmed to AutoData that the temporary suspension of contracts will be extended for two months and eight days starting on April 22nd.
The union leader revealed to the Brazilian media that SINMGRA negotiated with GM Brasil over some important aspects for the employees of the Gravataí complex, such as full meal vouchers during the dismissal, participation in profits and a full thirteenth salary, in addition to training courses for the staff that will be on strike. As such, the temporary suspension of employment contracts will guarantee the job stability of those affected.
The agreement to partially lay off workers at the GM Gravataí plant is intended to adjust inventory levels of Chevy Onix units to the demand for the vehicle, both in the local market of Brazil and in the rest of the South American countries where it is exported from the Brazilian factory. In addition, it occurs right in the middle of the preparations of the facility to begin manufacturing the updated version of the subcompact car that should debut during the first half of the year.

It is Ok, in my opinion GM should leave Brasil and a national car manufacturer should be there, I am since 1997 not in GMB anymore, asked my dismission and reallydo not care, anyway GMB Onix is not a own brasil project but a China one and receives a facelift now. how ever Autoesporte said the production is stopped for 3 months… BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen must leave Brasil also. Brasil is for people who is born in Brasil and all industries there must be brasilian, also the iron, steel and all mines should be only for local production only
This North American and European colonization since 1500 must be finally stopped
Then start it by going back to Brazil.
i tried to be re employed by GMB, even when S, Paulo is a bad city, does not have sea, the problem again was, it was not design, but package, and the girl siad only 6000 reais which is too few, here in germany without working can make the samemoney… and 24 h in sofa and bed can make my own designs or seiing the AI cars guys do and improving the design,,, so w t h need a GM in Brasil or Brasil
