Ford Joining Prototype Racing In 2027 To Compete Against Cadillac

General Motors’ chief crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, announced intent to rejoin international prototype racing in 2027, where its entries will rival the Cadillac V-Series.R in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Ford dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its prototype racers, winning the iconic endurance race four times between 1966 and 1969. Since then, Ford has focused more on different class victories, taking on the GTLM division with its Ford GT entries in 2016 and, more recently, racing the Ford Mustang GT3 in the GTD Pro class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Ford’s forthcoming prototype racing entry will be a full factory team. At this time, the automaker has not announced its partners for the prototype race car, and will announce further details like specs and drivers at a later date.

“We are entering a new era for performance and racing at Ford. You can see it from what we’re doing on-road and off-road,” said Bill Ford, Ford Motor Company Executive Chair. “When we race, we race to win. And there is no track or race that means more to our history than Le Mans… I am thrilled that we’re going back to Le Mans and competing at the highest level of endurance racing. We are ready to once again challenge the world, and ‘go like hell!’”

Currently, Cadillac Racing carries GM’s banner in international prototype racing, competing in the GTP class in IMSA and the Hypercar class in the WEC. It’s the only naturally aspirated vehicle in its class, featuring the 5.5L DOHC V8 hybrid engine under the hood. Currently, the GTP class is populated by Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Lamborghini, and Porsche – all luxury brands. When it joins the prototype racing scene, Ford will be the odd man out as the only mass-market manufacturer competing in the division.

Most recently, the Ford Mustang GT3 produced its first global victory in the GTD Pro division at the 2025 Rolex 24. Unfortunately, Ford’s win came at the cost of Corvette Racing.
