Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trax sales finished Q4 2024 in first place in its segment consisting of 20 models, when ranked by volume.

The Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) was at the very top with a 15 percent swell to 50,927 units. The Subaru Crosstrek was a close second with 49,964 units, within 1K deliveries of the Trax. The Honda HR-V remained in third via a four percent uptick to 36,663 units. The Jeep Compass, still in fourth, saw an 11 percent increase to 27,223 units. The Toyota Corolla Cross moved up to fifth with a 16 percent upswing to 25,347 units.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the Bow Tie brand’s second segment entry, fell to eighth place despite recording a 22 percent growth to 22,690 deliveries. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick also fields two entries. Sales of the Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), which shares its platform with the Trailblazer, were nearly flat to 13,593 units, placing tenth in the segment. The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s VSS-F platform mate, followed in 11th with 57 percent jump to 12,426 deliveries.

The Trailblazer earned a six percent share, flat year-over-year. Meanwhile, the Encore GX posted a four percent share while the Envista earned a three percent share, flat and up one percentage point, respectively.

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista and Encore GX – accounted for a combined 99,636 deliveries for a cumulative 28 percent segment share. That result keeps The General in first place in the segment.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 43,829 deliveries, good for a 11 percent segment share combined, placing the Korean conglomerate far behind GM and third overall.

One could argue that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 31,526 cumulative deliveries for an eight percent segment share, bumping the conglomerate to fifth place.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded eight percent to 356,305 units during Q4 2024, meaning the Chevy Trax outperformed the segment average.

It’s also worth noting that, of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 20 entries, though two of those models have been discontinued and are therefore destined to fall off this list. When combining sales volumes of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in the following order:

  • GM – 27 percent share, four models
  • Subaru – 14 percent share, one model
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 11 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 8 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – nine percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Toyota – seven percent share, one model
  • Nissan – seven percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy higher sales volumes and resulting segment shares. However, those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, are also able to hold their own, actually outpacing automakers offering several models.

The GM Authority Take

Although the growth in Chevy Trax sales has slowed from its meteoric rise throughout 2024, the Bow Tie brand’s entry-level crossover remained at the top during Q4 2024. The model recorded an 84 percent increase during the 2024 calendar year.

We maintain that the incredible success of the all-new, second-generation Trax is the result of a compelling product that’s stylish, roomy, and affordable, and also one that can be fun to drive. What’s not to love?

Thanks to its continuing success, GM continues to enjoy a dominant position in the subcompact crossover space thanks to respectable sales of four models from both Chevy and Buick.

About Chevrolet Trax

The 2025 Chevy Trax debuts the second model year for the nameplate’s second generation, ushering in a few critical updates and changes. That includes two new paint colors and an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex fuel-capable vehicle. Here are all the 2025 Trax wheels offered, along with exterior paint colors and interior colorways.

The Trax 2RS adds a convenience feature, namely a new eight-way power driver seat adjuster with two-way power lumbar support.

The Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LBP engine develops 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm.

The 2025 Trax is set to become the third most affordable new vehicle in the U.S. as competing models are retired or get significant pricing changes. The most expensive 2025 Trax comes in at $29,974 fully equipped, including a $1,095 destination freight charge – still under $30K.

  1. These are nice. I liked mine. I only had a couple of transient electronic glitches to mar the experience. However, I traded mine in on a 2025 Maverick XLT Luxury 2.0t AWD on February 1st. I missed having a truck, I wanted something affordable, garageable and useful, without the overkill of a midsize. Chevy refuses to sell the Montana here, which I think, with a few minor tweaks, (AWD option, more power) would sell well in the USA.

  2. A true bonafide winner from GM; great looks (my eyes see alot of Camaro cues in the design. GM said the next Camaro has to be more affordable. Well, with some variations in this platform with more power, why not?)……. a nicely put-together GM interior. It looks much more substantial compared to the Trailblazer.

The only thing missing IMO is the accomomdation for All Wheel Drive and a bigger 4 cylinder to go with it. Had GM designed that into the Trax platform, they could have competed with the Subaru CrossTrek.

What with most things that Barra and her Suits have messed up in their time leading GM into a Black Hole, I sometimes wonder how in the world they’ve managed to build this attractive CUV, a well-built and outfitted vehicle at such a low price!

    1. Agree with what you have to say, a great small vehicle that young families can afford, or just basic transportation for computers, without breaking the budget. BUT after the orange blob sticks his 25% tariff on these since they are made in Korea, sales will fall like a brick. GM gets a winner with these, and tRump is bound and determined to screw it up. I did read an article that said that manufacturers are getting vehicles like these on the ships as fast as they can to beat tRump’s tariffs.

      1. Did you not test drive your Bronco before you bought it? I’m always amazed when people buy a car and then complain that’s it’s too small, isn’t powerful enough, etc. Cars don’t shrink after you drive them off the lot, nor do the engines get less powerful

      2. Have you driven the 2nd generation Trax? We’ve had ours since January of 2024 and we do not feel it is lacking power at all. In fact, I have to be careful pulling out into traffic so I don’t squeal the tires. Our ’15 Cruze has a 1.4L turbo 4-cyl and the little 3-cyl in the Trax seems to have more power across the board even though it’s 3 inches taller and heavier than the Cruze.

      3. Well, there’s yet another dummButt “lawn mower” post. Keep in mind, this non-owner horse’s derriere Thomas bought and drove off in a Bronco Sport and then discovered it was a pig. Oink oink.

Like Anonymous Person, I also have to be careful pulling out into traffic so I don’t squeal the tires.

Every online review I’ve read/watched had surprised reviewers comment on how responsive the power delivery is, obviously due to the torque, 6-speed transmission and mapping. Including the effete snob “influencers” who lamented the Trax lacked creature features and performance found in vehicles costing thousands more.

  7. PPL who complain about the tiny 1200cc engine and whether it can do the job, look at reliability numbers… the Trailblazer and Encore GX are among the most reliable 3-year old vehicles on the market. These have to be well engineered, balanced vehicles to stand up to abusive American drivers on our high speed interstates, wide open country roads and pothole littered cities. I will continue to defend these even though I got out of mine. I was given $20k on a trade with 24k miles, and the dealer had it listed for $24,999. MSRP was $25,900. Shows strength of the product.
